keggy ideally you want the bmw tool for locking the cams, which locks the square bits on the end of the cams. put a straight edge on them and you can make sure they're just about aligned, with the lobes on one pointing towards each other, arrows on sprockets pointing up etc.

wen im in there today ill see if theyll lend me the tools winkeye. how do u removes the bit the crank pulley bolts onto? i need to remove it to take off the bottom cover

Ideally you unbolt it whilst it's in the car......... you will need to lock up the crankshaft, and get a damn long breaker bar on there, best of luck!
