If its possible (ie valve to piston clearance) id use a standard gasket, it will raise the compression which is never a bad thing. 8)

Except, perhaps, on a turbo engine conversion that has already caused enough agg!

I agree with lee, as standard theyre built with a compression ratio which will withstand all sorts of crappy fuel. Upping the compression ratio a little won't do any harm on the decent quality fuel we get.

A lot of heads have a cast in mark to show when theyve reached the skimming limit, do m52 heads have anything similar?

the m52b28 compression ratio is only 10.2:1 as standard, an e36 m3 is 11.3:1
cheers,

i don't know if the heads been skimmed or not before and with the amount taken off this time i'm playing it safe with the thicker gasket .

12 thou is more than the difference between standard and oversized gasket

Id be rocking the standard though, you would be somewhere about 10.8:1 8)

so i'll still be above normal compression with the thicker one but compression would be increased further by using the standard one .

all this has got my head done in

So would I with only 0.3mm skimmed off.

Standard gasket is 1.75mm
The thick one is 2.05mm

Thats 0.3 thicker.

12 thou, or 0.012" is 0.3048mm, or as near as makes no difference 0.3mm.

I would be banging a standard gasket back in there, just my opinion though.

Even if there's no dimples in the head face, you can measure the total thickness of the head from face to cam cover to see the total that's been taken off from stock.
I don't have the figure for a standard M52 head, but I'm sure someone on here can come up with it.

Dont worry about it, just take your time :D

The drill needs to go down the original hole square, following its line.

When you tap the threads, lube it up, and make sure you start the threads square. You will need to blow it out with air afterwards. Don't be affraid to run the tap down twice, but do get it clean. Lube the helicoil before it goes in with light oil, and check its clean.

Any crap or swarf will send the helicoil down on the wonk, so get it clean. Sorry for repeating myself :D

if i looked into another donk and bought a manual R-P reg e34 could i use the gearbox ?

not sure what it is yet but i think it's bent valves on pot 6 as there is a clank noise coming from there .

that noise is from pot 6 ,half way through cranking when restarting it it seemed like the whole engine seized and tried to crank itself out of the bay so i let go of they key, gave it few secs then it started :?

timing sounds way off, jumped about three teeth. but the compression test would have shown that wouldnt it all pots ? not just one being low as its two pistons per bang.

the block got the steel liners?

we've identified the problem and it's the valves on pot 6 . the head is coming off tomorrow and replace all the valves on pot 6 then put back together using a new gasket but this time it's going to be the standard one to pinch an odd bhp or two + it's half the price of the thicker one .

:D
