Is it just the crank that needs to be swaped over to an M50 block? is the rest the same, ie pistons rods head etc..

What are M50's like compared to M52's performance wise, is there much in it?

Now you have driven the M52 all the M50 will do is dissapoint you i feel as you can tell the difference sitting in the passenger seat how much quiker the M52b28 is of the M50b25

Crank, rods and pistons are different, the bores will need fettling also as the stroke is longer, new rings are a must, head gasket/bolts, rod bolts, oil seals and skim on the head while its off, you will also need timing cover gaskets and possibly crank oil seals, its a good opportunity to fit a new chain/guide. Thats about £400 worth of parts, another M52 lump is probably the easiest/most cost effective way to go.

Its too much of a risk and a good chance ill be throwing money down the drain trying to fix it so a new lump is in order.

I will remove the head though to see whats caused it as im curious myself.

Why though all you will waste is the gasket if the threads pull and whats that £20 head skim and pressure test is around £50 and that wont go to waste as a spare for an iron block m50b28

Cost me just shy of 500 sheets delivered, Its another steel liner block (98 ) and its supposed to be a very good lump in fine fettle, brought from a well known trader on e36coupe.

It also has one of those Alpina blokes M50 manifolds on it and BBTB 8) iirc he charges about 300 quid for these (could be more with the TB)

Im hoping to get this in over the weekend

That's a bargain price if it's a reliable engine with all those toys attached, good stuff. You could always use the lawnmower engine, that looks tasty.

Found out earlier he charges £410 for this set up (delivered) 8O its a neat job but not enough to warrant £400

Very late M52 that is!
Nice to see you have the M52 throttle Lee, im under the impression they give better response 8)

I take it you got the ECU/EWS with this engine?

£400 must = 100 bhp at least. You got yourself 310bhp there mate. M3 power

As long as the motor is genuine your laughing at that money.

No, the guy wanted an extra £100 for the ECU/EWS :?

The plan is to run it on my set up. Will this be fine? the engine is a late 98

You got me flapping now :)

You could put your entire engine loom and front pulley on the new engine. What you have is a 99-2000 Coupe/Touring/Convertible engine which is a hybrid of an M52 and an M52TU.

Well im now back on track :)

After consulting with Dan i had two choices to get the engine running right, i could swap the loom over with the front pulley and all the sensors or get the ECU from the engine im putting in.

Quick text to the bloke i got the engine off and £50 later i had this lot delivered today :D

Im so glad its EWS2 so its a plug and play affair!
