Valve cleaning

What do ppl think is the best way to clean up valves? is using a wire brush drill attachment tooo corse? also want to try and get the carbon off the stem, any advise would be great

Caustic soda hot wash, available at a cylinder head specialists, the less effort put in the better IMO

That is caustic soda, but its how its used that does the job

Doh ok, machine shop it is then i suppose i do need to get them re seated at some point so might as well do it as one big job.

get a drill. put the top of the valve stem in the chuck then spin it round while holding some emery tape on the carbonised bits.........

Just mind out that you avoid the the valve to seat contact surface!

This is what I did as well, the really badly caked stuff on the exhaust valves I used a sharp knife blade in parallel with the surface to get the initial rubbish off, then increasingly finer wet & dry (360 - 1200) and a finish off with metal polishmurran wrote:get a drill. put the top of the valve stem in the chuck then spin it round while holding some emery tape on the carbonised bits.........

Pleeeeeease buy some goggles if you're dealing with nasty chemicals too!

Its cool i work in theatre, even though working on my engine at work has nothing to do with work i still have to do risk assesments and h/s so all protective equipment is worn!!

Risk assessments and health and safety have been the pain of my life lol.

tell me about it but when you are surrounded by turns and twirlys (no offence ment to anyone) you have to be that extra bit carefull!!

mate of mine down the road normaly deals with nissan engines but aparently he tryed soaking some bits in cillit bang and they have come out awsome. i havent seen them yet but ill let you know.
