Hi , my work mate has a 325 touring M20 engine (E30 H reg) whch due to a cracked head has had a new head , cam , belts etc. The engine now runs ok but on a cold stat the idle hunts between 250 and 800 and does cut out. When the engine has run for a few minutes the idle is stable but after a while the idle goes upto about 1200. Apart from this the engine is stable and drive well. I would think this could be a mixture , or idle speed control valve fault etc but is stable after warm up apart from high idle. Please can any one help on this problem . Thanks

For future reference H reg ran from 1st August 1990 'til 31st July 1991, so yours is either a '90 or '91 car and not an '89 :thumb:

Not really relevant but just thought I'd point it out

Andy's guide is excellent! the pipes etc are cheap from stealers too, so if one is gone then its not too bad!

The Idle Control Valve can be cleaned out to aid it-all covered in the guide

GOOD LUCK!!!

Just a thought, but do you hear any hissing sounds around the intake manifold? I recently had a very somilar problem (with dodgy cold start & variable idle (400-1100 rpm)) on my '89 e30 Touring and it turned out to be a deteriorated intake manifold gasket(s). I initially thought ICV failing, etc, etc but it was a gasket problem along. I've since heard these gaskets deteriorate over time

Cheers,

Jeff

Good point.

Beowolf, you should sort your avatar out before a mod see's it. Nice looking tourer!

Theres one big gasket between the throttle body and the inlet manifold and then six smaller ones between the inlet manifold and the head.
