Underside Rust treatment

Hi I guess I'm not alone in finding large areas of surface rust underneath my E30 particularily along front chasis legs and was wondering best approach. I really dont fancy laying on my back appling acid based rust treatments and endless rubbing down and painting so have three alternatives in mind, ie to wire brush and:-

Apply waxoil OR paint with hamerite Or Liberally rub on grease.

Any thoughts recomendations particularly if tried and tested appreciated.

Wire Brush first
Pair of goggles,
Kurust Underneath, leave for 30 mins or so
Then waxoil

Just done it on my rear arches before any bubbling appears!

It actually sounds a good idea I think kurust goes off dark grey which is handy as mines met grey.

Mines dolphin grey, i did it a few weeks back as a bit of prevention for the winter, don't be shy with the kurust you have to really work it in, as i say wear goggles!it hurts when it gets in your eye. The kurust goes bright blue then almost black/grey. Time will tell if it is successful, but it should be to be honest.

kurust is very good. they key is to remove a large majority of the rust. wipe the surface to remove any dust and make sure that there is still a small amount of rust in the grain of the metal as kurust needs rust to react with. then use waxoyl or underbody sealer followed by waxoyl

Dude if waxoil was for ford and gm cars why did mine come from the factory with waxoil in all the internal recesses

Are you sure it it Waxoil? Just curious about how you can tell?

I'm sure it is a lot better than nothing anyway.

I would just used the best that I could find because it isn't the thing that I want to do every year!

I removed the plastic caps in the floor pan and the waxoil is visable

Waxoyl (Waxoil) is a brand name for cavity wax. There area load of different brands of cavity wax on the market for professional and DIY use. Before you use any cavity wax on a rust area, you need to properly treat the rust and then coat with a good quality rust paint, such as POR-15. Only apply the cavity wax after this.

I personally had bad experience with waxoyl, because of the application system. I heated the wax in hot water as recommened, but as soon as it came out the top of the gun it just congealed. I ended up with more wax on my overalls than in the car!! After this I bought several aerosol cans on cavity wax and used a long flexible extension to get the wax into all areas. The problem wuth aerosol is that it's thin, so you should apply coats. Spraying a load in the first time means the excess just runs out the sill hols etc.

The Bilt S50 is an aerosol - I did find that it dripped a bit but I found it surprisingly clean to work with. It is however a it more expensive!

I found their delivery very quick though.

Dude i use a compressor with a sealy gun with a 2ft extension and a hot air gun to heat the wax aerosols are a waste of time 90psi with a 5 direction cavity probe does the bussiness

Well done I'm sure that is the best way to do it proffesionally - but not all of us have access to that type of equipment. I think this thread was started by someone who wanted to do the job themselves.

Dude cost about £120 for the gear but well worth it if it saves your fantastic modern clasicc from the scapheap
