......these steel dowels that are pressed in to some TB's ?

Some kind of puller or some thing ?

I have drilled and battered to death two dowels so far but it took ages !

How about a slide hammer? We used one the other day to get the bush out of the E36 steering joint, worked a treat and didn't damage the bush what so ever :D

What, tap a thread in to the dowel and attatch the slide hammer to the tread ?

Just trying to think how you would attach the hammer to the dowel or how the hammer could get a grip of the dowel ?

I don't own or have ever used a slide hammer so i'm a bit clue less

can you get "behind" the dowl? Not sure if the slide hammer has an attachment that opens up inside the dowl? Will ask my mate, he will know how to get it out for sure

The first thing i tried was using a jig saw with a metal cutting blade and it hardly scratched it ! After one minuets sawing the blade was worn out,see the picy below.

I used a slowish speed on the jig saw and a drop of oil.

Erm,i'm a bit scared of using heat on them as the TB's are made from Aly.

Theres so little dowel showing that it makes it hard to grip with moleys.

Whats a figure saw mate ? I tried to google search it but no joy.

Diamond drill bit would be handy as i've all but blunted my drill bits getting two dowels out.

I've tried it mate,it just bends the exposed end.I tried to hammer it with a screw driver sort of inbetween the dowel and the hole in which it sits but the dowel is well hard.If i had tried to force it any more i think the TB would have broke by the hole if that make any sence to you.I'm a bit shit at describing stuf some times.

I shall carry on trying to sort it on Monday,i'm off to Rockingham tomorrow to watch the racing ! :woohoo:

How about a couple of sockets, some washers and a nut and bolt.

Get a socket that will fit inside the hole in the alloy casting, and sit on the end of the dowel. Then get a larger socket that is a little larger than the dowel, and put it over the exposed end of the dowel.

Then use a nut and bolt (right through the middle of the sockets and the dowel) and a couple of washers (if needed) to wind the dowel out. Quite often this will shift things much better than trying to bash it out. You could also use the two socket method but clamp it in a big vice to force the dowel out. A bit of gentle heat would also help.

Cheers,

Ian.

They were obviosly pressed in so i reckon your best bet is to bung someone a couple of quid to press them back out. Heat is a great idea if u know what your doin but not always the best way, if u heat to much the alloy will crumble away, if u don't heat it enough u still won't get it out. Unfortunately there is no happy medium, it will cost less to get them pressed out and there won't be any damage or stress to the face. Good luck, will look brilliant when its on. :)

I apologise in advance for the shity drawing(and explanation)

The dowel would have been pressed in from the gasket/head side of the TB as the hole that it is pressed into narrows to the same diameter as the inside of the dowel so it carn't be forced out that way.

I don't know weather this very rough drawing will be of help or not !?

Image

I've got a few things i want to try that have been sugested(sp?) after that i want to see if i can tap a tread on the inside of the dowel and screw in some threaded bar in to it so i can make like a home made slide hammer ?

Or to use your idea Ian sort of in reverse to try to make a puller but it all depends if i can tap a thread in to it.

Thanks again for every ones help :)

guess you won't get this in time before tomorrow Andy... but if you bring em to me on your way to rockingham i'll weld up the exposed end so you can put something through from the back and bash em out. shouldn't damage the aluminium, i used a similar trick to get a sheared stud outta my cylinderhead and it's been fine since.
