The VANOS hydraulic actuators can be positioned anywhere between maximum and minimum cam advance. The VTEC system can only be switched from between min and max advance.

IIRC the BMW VANOS actuators have a coarse helix that screws onto the cam, the chain drives the actuator round via a sproket running on splines on the actuator. Hydraulic pressure moves the actuator up and down the cam varying the cam alignment (relative to the drive sproket) since it's driven by the helix inside the actuator. One of those times when a picture's worth a thousand words :chuckle:

Yeah, but that subject to me know the correct AFR's through the whole load/rev range, plus i don't have my own lap top so i can't keep playing with it so whilst Toby was helping(thanks mate  ) with his lap top the quickest way of getting it fairly decent was playing with the fueling whilst driving.

The other thing with the AFR target is you need the AFR's in roughly the right ball park to begin with i think ??

We were getting over 15:1 in some places where we wanted about 14:1.

I just wanted it safe and driving OK, Dave can perfect it as he's the don not me ! :)

no probs Andy it was good fun learning how to sort the basics out, i'd certainly be a bit happier about fiddling with my MS map having had a go with yours!

only thing is it might make a bit more power on WOT if you could get someone who knows what they're on about to take some fuel out - i didn't dare in case i detonated your engine to death 8O

i'll bring the comp on Sunday, maybe we can persuade Ant to spend 5 mins tweaking it winkeye

Just found some sample maps with the new software and they have the AFR targets set up, mine was all block filled with 12.5:1.

If you look at the WOT AFR's it starts at 13:1 decaying down to 12.5. I think this is like a base map or starting point that you tweak to suit your engine as i think it's the same for an E30 M3 and a cozzy V6 ?

Can you remember roughly what my WOT AFR's were ?

i'm pretty sure they were dipping to 11.5-12 in places on WOT Andy!

so looking at that (very useful!) chart, and assuming it's applicable to your engine (i'm not sure how ign/cam timing might affect how rich/lean it's best to run?), there's plenty fuel to be taken out and plenty power to be gained 8)

Yeah, sorting the WOT shouldn't take long as there's only about 12 sites to adjust. Or even less if only 4k upwards is adjusted as thats where it's going to be at the pod ?

May be 13s up to 5.5 tapering down to 12.5 at 6 and up ?

the really low (rich) AFRs were in the upper half as i remember, can't be more specific though.

maybe set the laptop up and datalog the drive down to the meet? then discuss results with Ant?

dunno. at risk of going wildly O/T now so sorry in advance.

i'm torn between heading west to M1 J21 services and hopefully meeting others to drive down with... alternative is taking the A6 pretty much all the way which is quite a nice south easterly drive though slower.

wouldn't mind going M1 so i can give it some stick winkeye

have a look at a map and see what you think mate. i'm about the same distance east of leicester as the M1 is west, if that makes sense, due north of market harborough on the A47...

J21 services would be good for me, it's some where handy to park up and fire the lap top up ?

Sorry to take this OT a bit..

I emailed Dave Walker Re: the VANOS and here is the reply he sent me:

"I can't give you a time scale on this but we are going to be looking at it before the end of the year. Not specifically VANOS but the Ford system which I believe works in exactly the same way."

Hope this helps some people.
