its been many times but you need to re drill the mounting holes for the studs and even then i belive there are still "overlap" issues with the ports lining up

i thought the 2 piece 320 manifold worked?
not that i've looked on a M20 but i though this might be handy for a M30 turbo.

mines been done! no overlapping issues here, i bought it from a zoner who had it re-ported and re-drilled the mounting holes as Kos said...
.. works a treat!

From what ive been told in South Africa Lots of 327 turbo conversions are employing the same technique and works well.

Has anyone tried leaving the manifold in it's standard position and then plumbing the gasses back up to a turbo? Kinda like those John Volk adaptors you can buy for the US exhaust manifolds?

Thats an interesting point.
Wouldnt the distance from the manifold to the turbo affect the performance in some way though?
Still new at this so please forgive me if Im wrong.

it shouldnt do really if you look at some of the equal length manifolds out there

Just been talking to a Mechanic and he said that having the manifold a distance from the turbo unit would cause lag as the gas would have a longer distance to travel. Apparentlt it should be located as near to the turbo as possible.

It's not so much the distance the gas needs to travel per-se, it's more the heat it loses on it's way to the turbo.
Turbo response times are massively effected by the temperature of the exhaust gas (another reason I can't see the point in rear mounted tubbys)
I think for a low cost and easy conversion the idea might have some merrit.
Certainly the adaptors from the states can flow for quite a lot of power so there's no reason something to fit a UK mani wouldn't

Im having trouble picturing this but by turning the manifold upside down, im assuming you guys do this so as to mount the turbo at the front of the engine for clearance etc?

You could also use the manifold from a 324tds flipped upside down
Has the added bonus of having a T3 flange already on it and a take off for an external wastegate
Looks something like this

Dips sold one on ebay a few months back and it went for about £130 ish IIRC
Mine came with the turbo(turbo for sale) with the work done to make it work upside down.
Got it for a little more than Dips's one
Don't see them on the market that often.
I haven't anyways
maybe I was looking in all the wrong places

Toby got manifold flanges for £10ea and the turbo flange was £20 IIRC
Try and get a back copy of PPC
Toby had a write up about turboing his M30 powered chariot
if you can't or havent welded before, Get someone competant to do it for you

Yeah I have a T34 myself and wanting to flip my manifold too.
Much cheaper I believe.
I know Blingsta has a flipped manifold on his turbo setup.
Good Luck

A large hotside is needed on the good old M20
Can't comment on the lag issue, as it's not fitted YET

The more people who contribute all adds up to a larger database of info for future use to all on the zoneisTURBO wrote:turbocrazy wrote:is there a lag problem
