From what I gather on here, the best way to make a car drift is to make it so light at the back that its totally undriveable then back off by one percent :)

Small, stretched tyres on the narrowest rear rims you can find.
Welded diff to force the tyres to start slipping on corners
I'm not sure about suspension, drifters seem to drop their cars but I'd have thought a soft rear would help it step out as weight transfers to the outside wheel. Maybe soft springs and a really solid roll bar :)

Of course this is a bit different to the fast road/trackday approach where you need all the grip you can get, especially at the back.
E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap :)

I agree... with dimebag.

Even if they can take the abuse, they're shit fore drifting, 25% lock just doesnt cut it.

I thought about running a welded diff on the road for a while but got pretty put off. I'm too irresponsible to start with

The standard 25% lock makes the car a lot more tractable (I don't really know what that means but it feels like the right word so I'll run with it for now). when I switched to an LSD I really enjoyed being able to get the power down quicker, traction out of tight corners. It's just much better overall. This is BMW after all :)

In my best brianmooore impression - the e30 lsd is good at what it's designed for.

It's certainly gonna drift better than an open diff too.
Right word, properly used lol

Didn't know what you meant to begin with, until I'd looked up tractable and came back to edit the post. lol - finally things fell in to place.

They cant take the abuse! Max buy a 325i for your first car and send her sideways/circle it at a few road ends, it wont be long before your looking for a new diff or welding it up!

using an open diff and you can count backwards:

Image

usind smal tires in high gears (like 3rd) and you can do the same count for your clutch.

i have (nearly) total controll on the drift and use a lsd with 75%. no clutch kickin. only a stearing impulse @ WOT in 3rd gear when ever i want.

if your looking to drift you want the car as low as poss try and have your front suspension set soft and the rear hard withe low profile tires about 40 psi and an lsd or lwd

I've driven my 25is very hard for two years without any problems. the diff is perfect and might only fail 1 out of ten times. if it fails its only at the start of a donut and has NEVER failed on a drift. its a standard 25% lock lsd with 17s.
an e30 lowered and hardened with a bit of practice will drift lovely. for the sake of a car you want to learn in weld it and spend the lsd money on something else. you'll live with a welded on the road depending on how posh you are

drifting with an open diff is like playing football with a flat ball, it can be done but its shit

Body roll? Try spinning arround a 316i or 318i on standard setup :D

As for drifting, cant say i have the skill to drift properly, dont like abusing the sport either (318i was a different story altogether!) Went out with Barry last night though and had some fun sideways roundabout fun in his sport :)

318i needs gravel/shit really, then you can spin untill your dizzy without straining it too much, opens diffs are great on gritty surfaces :D
