help needed!

i got told a guy i know makes balances props but he doesnt!

he can cut and weld but doesnt balance and wont. but i had a good look at his 22 litre funny car!!!!

he was welding the exhausts on cool!



but now i need a prop place prefer north east so i can drop it off and get it done quick

any ideas people?

Can't help with a prop place up north but my AFM has left an indentation (sp?) on the sound deadening material. My mounts are e30.de copies from karan.

ah so im not to far off if the sound deadening is getting hit.

well i cant go much lower or i will be hittin the steering rack.

i expect some sagging in the mounts to give me some more space.


where did you get the 335i badge charlie? is it home made or did you get one from BMW for the new 335i?
i dont have a badge i may keep it that way?

ok here are the updates


last night i cut the prop to length and finished the engine mount ready to be welded.






it needed some adjustment to fit but i think this looks just right



ready to be tack welded then andy (once again with the help)
will be taking it to be super welded.





2 props (for those with the good eye sight will note i cut one before the photo)



into 1 prop!
now it need to be fine tuned and tack welded then i will send it to a company near newcastle called 'major and Aspinall'
if they can take it?



fine job me thinks with the cutting! i used some tape to wrap around the prop (so i got the ends to match up) then i put a small grove all the way round with the angle grinder. then the tape came off and i had a guild to cut through.


it seemed really easy to cut through after trying to cut through the 8mm plate for the engine mounts....





right this picture is from inside th engine bay just before the brake servo.

is it the fuel filter? its in the fuel lines but i know on the 325i its near the fuel tank. will it restrict the fuel flow? reason for it not starting the other day?

i'm not sure you needed to cut that prop twice Ric?

i might be wrong but i was under the impression you use rear 2/3 of the m20 prop incl centre bearing etc, then join the front bit of the e34 prop in front of the bearing?

still, e30 props are cheap enough if you have to get another

mounts look good.

Thats right Toby, seemingly the ends are friction welded together. I got Recoprop to do mine and the told me this. They spin one piece of the shaft and ram the end flange in and squeeze it i think.
The friction welds the two together.
Apparantly all BMW shafts are like this and are tricky to do with only a few places able to do them.
BTW i think they replace all the tubing on the modified section anyway and just use the end flanges.

hum i got told the e34 centre bearing wasa bit bigger and stronger......

thats why i cut it twice.

its should be ok though?

yeah Ritchie they re-tube it and only use the bearings. but i need to tack them together toget the exact length.

i did have a look at the bearings and thought they were pretty similar..... still the e35 prop should have had a better life as i didnt drive it much

well i hope this doesn tdouble the cost......

It's home made out of two 325 badges I had thought about a new one from BM but didn't want the new style/size lettering. I'm thinking about removing mine.... I quite like the idea of a 316 badge

Your project is coming along nicely mate, if for whatever reason you need another E30 325 prop I've got an old spare one in the shed...

right for those that are following this conversion i am sorry but no pics today.

last night was a good one as we got the 2nd engine mount in place and tacked up ready to be super wedled.

im having a problem with space right now

the rad is too big!

so i have cut off the lip of the rad......fear so much fear.
got it down so the next plan for some extra space is to cut the AC belt holder off. its difficult doing it inside the engine bay but it has to come off!

couldnt do it last night as i was trying to angle grind inside the engine bay and hold the light at the same time.....not a good idea. i even managed to grined my phone slightly (it was my torch) ....oops


next thing to do on sat is get the down pipes on and measure theg Y-piece for the exhaust cut and place.

cut the AC belt holder of the crank

fit the gear linkage if it gets here? hope the post man does his thing.

test the temp sensors and fit if all is good?

might fix the rad and tube it up if i know how? i may do a search unless some one can post some pics of how they have arranged the tubes?

Dude, you're getting there!

To make cutting off the air con belt holder you can just undo the eight bolts that hold the outer part of the pulley on (not the stupidly tight centre nut that's set to about 450,000 lb/ft torque!) then just run a cutting disc round the centre of the 'V' and the air con belt holder will fall off in two peices.

And in case you don't know - to make the temperature guage work you'll need to use an E30 sensor for it in the thermostat housing.

yup 8x 13mm head bolts for the crank pulley Ric, might as well have it off and cut it straight

we can help with the coolant pipes,they aren't hard if you have all the e34 stuff to hand.

what exactly did you cut off the rad again?!

thought i heard on the radio last night royal mail calling off the latest strike, so you might be lucky and get the linkage... not that my bloody oil temp sensor has arrived of course

i just cut them off to make more space for the dissy cap and the AC pully (which is getting cut off anyway)

i hope i have not damaged it but i may have hit the rad slightly...... not sure.....

my rad used to swing backwards because i didn't secure it properly at the bottom because i'm an idiot, and the crank pulley practically ate through the bloody thing. still the same rad on there though, it's fine

Yeah, should be fine.
The top rail on my radiator has been pushed back slightly by the dizzy cap but it causes no grief.

There is plenty of clearance at the bottom with the air con belt holder cut off.

Are you using the E34 radiator, if so how are you mounting it?
I used two right hand E30 plastic bottom mounting cups, one each side. The left hand one kept unclipping itself from the bodywork so I simply riveted it in place.
I used the standard 325i top plastic bracket with cut down rubbers.

the rails on the rad are fine i know they dont do anything so chop-chop.

i had to cut the a/c belt part off too. i found there are about 5 spot welds on it, these hold the a/c part onto the rest. i managed to cut mine off quite neatly once i'd ground away at these welds.

oh, the bottom of my rad is held onto the front panel with tye wraps

I've done the same to my rad but only at the top. I've got no a/c or power steering so I could completely ditch that pulley.

It came from the factory like it, Mine was a prefacelift 316 auto m10. (shit thats wrong ) Although to be fair it went quite well.

To mount it at the top I used an M40 engine top rad mount and extended the rubbers.

hum no power steering is something i have been thinking about for some time.

thursday night progress:

removing the viscous fan wa becoming a nightmare no tool fit!

so made one out of 5mm scrap metal, had a good handle actually







with that removed i started the rad chopping.
glad to hear more people have done it.











next was the AC crank belt holder thing to come off.
i decided not to take the 8 bolts off as i had a bit of space to get the grinder in and cut it away.

better in day light as i used my mobile as a torch and put a few cuts in that....oops

next is the exhaust.

these are a few of the bits.



one flange is on the Y-peice already but the weather up here is anul and keeps raining!



im doing a toby unna special with the gear linkage as i got posted the bottom bar but not the pivot bar!

cut, drilled, 2 plates and some bolts. this will have to do for now as time is super short!

has to be done by saturday the 18th.......tick tock

i didnt think to extend it across the engine adn then down to the mount!
thats a clever thought.

it would have been much better and they look very strong!
also they get around any problem of getting at the bolts!

i have to lower the gear box down to get to the clutch slave cylinder and then i will attach the bodged gear linkage

i had to get the gear linkage sorted so as i said before i crafted this



it wont stay on forever but it should do for now and the z3 gear shifter feels great! good purchase from the zone bmw factory shop.

oh and i wanted some more storage space for my move to manchester so i kicked the ski hatch in
i had the seats out as i have moved the battery to the boot. ltook longer than i expected to be honest. but the kicking eased the pain.







oh and now the best bit the beast breaths fire!!!!!!!

i spent about 20mins trying to start the m30 but it would not fire. after last week with it not starting i was frustrated and confused but then...


i remembered last time we tried to start the m30 we could not smell fuel and andy suggested switching the fuel lines round adn guess what

Where did you get the tubing and what boxes are you using?

Do you need a E30 325 gearshift top linkage (don't know what you call it) that the shifter bolts into?? I've got a spare one from a breaker.

that gear link bar looks fine, i'm still using mine. i've not tried using m20 parts on my car but as the position you put the engine in affects where the lever comes up, i reckon it's no bad thing having the link adjustable. i spent a fair while fiddling until the lever position was perfect
