if anyones wondered about using vinegar...

it seems to do the trick nicely!!

I got some calipers off Theo ages ago and on Friday night swung via Morrisons on the way home and picked up 5L of malt Vinegar for £2.20.

I put a bin bag into a bucket as a liner then seperated the cal;ipers and left them to steep over the weekend, I got them out on Sunday night and gave them a wire brushing and a scrub then put them back for another night.

I got them out again last night and after some more wire brushing and a good bit of elbow grease with a normal rough scrubbing brush, the calipers seemed to look a bit better





The light brown "Fresh" rust looking areas are where the metal was exposed so I think thats oxodising and will rub down ok, I could be wrong though. Either way I'm happy and they should look fairly decent with a coat of paint.

Everyone knows about the penny trick? I've used it on golf clubs before and it works a treat!!

Yes you can use cola and it would be better.

Cola contains both phosphoric and citric acid, and both are stronger than acetic acid (vineger)

I used bench wire grinder, no dirt or rust or anything stood a chance. They were back to bare metal in no time. Then for the tricky gaps i used a very stiff rotary brush in a drill. Then rubbed them down with some strong degreaser and bingo color them.

Well I 'swung by' Somerfield on my way home and bought 2.5 gallons of Cola for the princely sum of just £1.08 (9p per litre). So now discs and callipers are fizzing & popping away. Be interesting to see the results by the weekend.

would this work on other parts aswell, or is it just hard cast metals, im thinking lower arms nuts botls etc...

What way is the battery connected across this Brian i hear its the best way to remove rust, (i want to do my toolkit) one terminal on the Anode and where does the other one go??

I can't remember, but the lump of scrap iron is a sacrificial ANODE, so probably the positive wire goes to this and the negative to whatever you're derusting.
