Genuinely interesting, thanks for posting. 
I'm never too sure how hot the diff oil gets back there. There was a comment on the 'extra dials' thread about having a sender and monitoring it - however I think that'd just make me paranoid about something I wouldn't otherwise consider.

diff oil definatly gets hot if you're giving the car a proper work out. just give the car a decent thrash then reach under and touch the diff casing!
the z3m used a similar rear diff, but had a different rear cover with a large finned section to help cool it, i think s14 200sxs and some of the skylines have proper rear diff oil coolers.
i know mine gets warm and stays warm for a long time as our cat loves snuggling up close to it!
