nice show si, youll be surprised how easy it is to get it all back together, the germans seem to do things which just make sense. plus the fact that you have access to the best manual for the e30 and i dont mean the haynes book of lies.

no offence taken! i just think it will make life easier with the loom all out as i found some rust in some places where the loom just needs to be out the way, i've labelled it all up and know off my head where most of it runs and what 90% of the plugs are for which is quite gay really.

I'm not worried about the mechanicals because i know where everything runs!

Nice work Si. A brave job to take on by anyones standards but I reckon you're right. This is gonna make it so much easier in the long run.

I can give you a link to a guy for the loom tape if you need it. I did my engine bay as it had turned to dust. It was really cheap and is spot on as per original.

i've seen shells acid dipped and blasted and its a dangerous thing to do, you may find too many horrors and signs of previous accident damage and start looking for a new shell which in reality may not be better

if its straight and just needs some welding and paint then leave it

having to primer it, seam seal , under seal, paint it inside out, etc will add a large ammount to the overall cost of the project

is it worth it ?? you got to know where to stop. if its a car for keeps then yes may be worth doing. chirst i would go that far on my M3 and i'm pushing the boat out with that !!

The shell in my mind is straight and not seen any major action in it's life, there's rust in places and plates needed here and there, but i'll get photo's up when this is being done in the next few weeks. It's soild in alot of the important places.

Bazzla whats bead blasting?! bare metal jobbie? I've got a good painter coming round whenever i bell him about a price on the spray job, he's workshop is in east molsey and he does repairs on bentleys,astons,lambos so it sounds good but i've yet to cast my novice eye on his work yet but he is a petrol head himself and has a fetish for bmw's as his missus drives an E46 B3s cabby. Bead blasting would take the shell bake to bare metal including any flakey rot. Your painter sounds like he should be good. I agree, B3's are awesome!

Its all held in with cross head screws, unclip the arms of the spung flap at the front as well.

si to get the sunroof out park in a unlit street and tell pacerpete there is a car abandoned with a good sunroof in it

That needs a colour change - Diamond black isn't a very inspiring colour. Alpina blue would be superb with all the engine bay, interior, boot etc done. Straight gloss black is nice but if you wanted to keep it metallic black, Cosmos (E46 M3) is a lovely colour with a tinge of blue to it.

Me, I'd be doing it Alpina blue with gold pinstripes for a car that really stood out but in a tasteful and authentic way.

Only just seen this thread too. Bead blasting is ok but most painters hate it. The trouble is that it gets into all the chassis rails and just keeps on dropping out all the time. Especially prone to doing it when they are putting the last coat of lacquer on! I have a mate locally that looked at all the pics of the bare metal blast job I did on my touring and he reckons I was mad. He uses a company local to us who acid dip and then epoxy coat or coat in weld through primer ready to go again.

The other problem with blasting is that it can distort large flat panels if the operator doesn't know what he's doing. I did mine myself and took far too much time over it. Given the opportunity again, I would get it dipped and coated.

This would rule out the mess from bead blasting and give you a fresh finish. As for uncovering new disasters, surely that is what you want - to get rid of it all forever, right? You wouldn't be going down to a bare shell to do half a job now would you
