between a lsd and a wealded diff im presuming they both behave in the

same way when you turn the outputs i.e turn in the same direction..so

how would you know you got a proper lsd if it had no marking's or

numbers on it

im not really sure about this one, but i have heard it from someone. the difference is when you actually turn that's when it behaves differently with a proper lsd. a proper one it would unlock the other tire relative to which way you are heading. as for the welded ones, both wheels spin whether it's a straight or a turn, hence, more prone to spin outs.

anyway of checking without the diff on car???

i suppose take the back finn cover off the diff.....will the welded one be obviouse to spot

Ordinary open diff (and welded one as well) you can easily see the small gears for the diff. On a LSD they are mostly enclosed inside a tube.
