Changed the rocker cover gasket on the 525i today, thought some of you M50 types might be interested in pics of the cam wear. I thought it looked pretty good considering its on 249000 8)

LOL a fair bit! I took the plugs out to drain it into the cylinders, you should have seen my neighbours looking when I started it up

Can anyone tell me if the sump can be removed with the engine still in the car? I'm thinking my only option is to fix this myself... 8O :? winkeye

Take it back the the trader you brought it off!!

More seriously i'm not sure if the sump will come off in situ. I know on the m20 its a pain in the arse with the engine needing to go up a fair bit to release the sump. Horrible job to be honest.

I didn't buy it. I don't blame Spadge in the slightest it's just one of those things. It's ironic (to me) that the day after I sort out the tax and the rocker cover gasket it goes wrong but I am getting used to BMWs doing this to me. I may as well fix it as it doesn't look like that bad a job, bloody knew there was a reason I downloaded the Bentley 5-series pdf....
Do I need a new sump gasket? :?

Hi mate rotten luck yet again :(
Obviously i had no idea the oil pump was on its last legs or i certainly wouldn't have driven it all the way to you. With a quarter of a million miles on the clock its had a good innings and of course things don't last for ever.
Are you sure you didn't drop anything into an oil way whilst doing the cam cover gasket as its a bit coincidental it should go just after you did it?
Best of luck with it mate

Yep I am having fun this year, it can only get better!
It's not done yet mate - I am going to try and fix it, I barely drove it once the warnings came on and was about 2 mins from home on my way to work.
I am as certain as I can be mate, I was bloody careful :) - I went for a good 60 mile round trip to a mates after doing it and it was fine. I have been deliberately not caning it too, I reckon cars are like women - treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen winkeye

It's telling me low pressure on the display and the lifters are clattering over about 3.5k ( I only tried this a couple of times ) I know it has the right amount of oil in.
Not sure what else it could be to go that suddenly, I think maybe some crud has moved about where I had the cover off, might be worth trying a flush?
Or some thicker oil, in fact maybe it's because I put some new oil in it
