Good progress here mate, bit of a crazy time to be doing it with uni exams coming up though, fair play fella!!!

I got my M20 ready to be lifted out yesterday, just waiting for my mate to get here to give me a hand then it's up the scrappy to get the oil pick up pipe then prepare to fit my M52 :)

Very nice car by the way!

as above, you need the E36 325/328 front half mated to E30 rear half using a modified E30 centre bearing!

Looking at your pic iyt looks like you have the larger guibo pattern hence needing the 325/328 prop.
M50 320/323 uses the smaller one!

Think the 318is rear will be ok,pretty sure all E30 rear halfs are the same?
I used an M20 one with no problems.

i found it easier with the m50 to remove the front cross member , bolt the engine to it and then put engine in from underneath saves you damaging that clean bay !

just noticed the gearbox / prop problem...........

Why dont you use the m42 gearbox and a e30 325i prop ? (thats what i did)

this means you have better gearing and you can use a normal e30 diff.

No reason why the M52 cover wont fit, both vanos engines use the same cylinder head

why ? what way does it drive with e36 325 g/box and 318is diff??

i thought the flywheel doesnt match up..if it drives ok id be happy..i dont mind a top speed of 125mph..thats the difference isnt it????

The ratios in the M50 box are awkward.
I ran mine on a 4.10 diff for a while and it was an experience.
First gear was a waste of time, just revs everywhere and topped out about 105/110mph.
Imm using a 3.46 diff now and although not perfect it is much better!
3.25 from an E30 M3 is ideal.

i presume you get much better acceleration though do you??1/4 mile time?

i could live with 110mph until i sourced another diff.i have an e30 mkI sport dif if thatd be better

Shit hot for acceleration, dont know how long itll last though winkeye
Sport diff will be better, not ideal but definately better!
Infact,if your not too bothered about over revving then could be a good compromise between acceleration and motorway speeds :D
Mine still gets off well using the 3.46 though winkeye

o-100 so with the way my gearing will be should be a nice bit faster than an e30 318is

4400..bloddy hell..she must accelerate fast so up hig....60-110

If the diff ratio is inappropriately high, it just effectively moves the gear positions down one. Fifth becomes fourth, fourth becomes third, etc.
Unfortunately, this just leaves you with a useless first gear and effectively a four speed box.

I'm using the 3.64 diff, I wonder what first will be like 8O just as well it won't be my everyday car.
My 5 series oil pickup pipe is cracked so I'm stuck now the M20 is out, no forklift drivers up the scrappy on a Saturday :x

Brian what sort of progress have you made since your last set of pics? It seems to be coming on pretty good mate :)

i organized my tools ..which took bout 3 hours as they were scattered all over the garage..

i tcut and meguire polished one side of the car..

i really had a day of "procrastinating"

today im gonna fit the e21 g/box mounts
the e28m5 engine mounts and the alloy e36 mount

and take off my exhaust

and have a look at the drop the subframe idea of mdtech

@eko is first gear really that bad??not 30mph like normal i get but does it just do 5mph or something??

The m50 flywheel fits inside the m42 gearbox no bother at all, compare them side by side and you will see they are same overall length.

This means with the 4.10 diff you have just now, and the IS gearbox, you get a car you can drive daily and RPM that sits normal on motorway. oh and fucking awesome acceleration

Your tech1 sport diff (3.64) wont be anything like Eko's 4.10, should be ok to live with if you dont use the motorway to often.
Ive got a Viper 2 chip in mine and the rev limiter is raised to 7200rpm although I rarely take it above 6800.

When I fitted mine I slid the engine and box underneath the car on the subframe, lowered the car back down onto axle stands and then raised the lump with an engine crane as I didnt have a load leveller.
