You should not be cutting any earth wires at all. Assuming these are a few different sizes of brown and/or brown /orange wires in a black sleeve, then they should go to the earthing point on the drivers side strut tower (or any other suitable earth point).

It comes out of the passengers side, small black wire.. I'll earth it then

Make 100% sure it contains brown or brown/orange wires (inside the sleeve). BMW does not generally use black for ground, so be very careful. It's quite common to find a red (live) wire inside a black outer sleeve, and you really don't want to be putting this to ground 8O

Well the one on with the diagnostics plug was an earth the small lead with the fuse box earth was a live.. Does it need to be connected or is it surplus like the fuse box one?

Fuse box earth ??

I'm really confused now. I think you best take a couple of pictures. You don't want to be feeding any earth wires into the fuse box.

Jhonno - does it look anything like this?....

On my B30 loom, the 'black' wire (arrowed) is a red live with a black outer sleeve as Ian said - infact, I think I asked Ian about the exact same wire.

Roll back the rubber sleeve at the end, so that you can see the true colour of the wire.
Any brown or brown/orange must be earthed, and any red, at the battery end, goes to battery pos., except for a possible red that just 'passes through' the loom on it's way to the fusebox, and now may be duplicating an existing E30 wire.

Right guys.. Just need some clarification of what lives are needed n which arent.. Im gonna run the standard e30 fusebox live so does that mean i can tape up the one in the s50 loom? you have the 2 lives which come out the drivers side of the wiring box which will be connected, and it sounds like i have to run the small black live round to the drivers side from the passengers side.. The red wire with the starter relay live, that is the s50 fusebox live yeah? In fact thinkin about it, it will be tidier to use the s50 live into the fusebox wont it? i assume it gets power from the loom?

When I modded an S50 loom I removed all the surplus live cable, if you cut off all the conduit/sleeving and insulation its a lot easier to see whats what

Bit of an update

Car is being trailered to a fitter to have the alarm looked at Tues afternoon.. Soon find out if the engine actually works or not!

Still to do..

- Sort throttle cable
- Some form of air filter
- Manifolds/exhaust
- Tidy wiring
- Brake servo/master cylinder
- Usual odds and sods, finish mounting bits here and there etc

Then its ready for its MOT!! (I think..)

Dan,

Sorry to say it, but that looks very wrong.

This is a picture of an M50/52 taken from the E36 Bentley manaul, but it should be basically the same on the S50.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much of a job it is. I suspect it's relatively easy if you have done it before, but a turd of a job if you haven't. I've never had to mess with cam timing, or Vanos, so don't really know what's involved. I do know the procedure is in the TIS, but I still don't have my copy to look at.

Dameon,

While you have the top off your engine, is there any chance you could wind it to TDC on No1 cylinder and take a similar picture to Dan's above ?

This would help to confirm 100% that Dan has 'issues'.

Cheers,

Ian.
