M20 flywheel on S50 / M50 / M52 swap.

Theres nothing good about an M40 flywheel, its just a big unnecessary lump with a smaller diameter clutch

yep, i agree with that.

had both side by side and compaired, i decided to go with the dual mass m50 clutch and flywheel.

Means i can use the standard starter etc and the clutch is bigger

Might consider upgrading at a later date.

Im trying to figure which bits I can use - I have full M20 and M40 stuff, so mixing and matching is not a problem.

yip, fits perfectly.

m40 box is almost the same size as the e36 box.

I have all the parts needed, just need to get an engine. Damn BMW for making things so easy

I do have both 318i and 325i props at home but thats not much use without an M50 under the bonnet
Logic would say the 318i prop would be the one because of the gearbox length. I guess it would depend on what effect the M50 has on the gearbox position.

compaired to the e36 box the m40 was about the same.... i should be able to tell you tomoz when i trial fit the engine and box.

im fabricating my own mounts to move the engine forward as its roughly 2.5 inches too far back.

will take exact measurments tomorrow and try again.

gotta move the engine forward to get the gearlinkages to work etc.

I shortened the linkages for my E46 box by 50 mm

yeah its 50mm too far back, and prop is 50mm too long.

rather than modify linkages and get a shorter prop im just gonna make mounts.

But you will also move weight even further over the front wheels which will compromise handling.
Not worth it IMO.

The prop on the IS is too long.

Im guessing that the IS prop is the same as the m40 as the boxes are the same.

still deciding my next course of action.

the m50 is pushing the gearbox 60mm further back than normal.

So with an S50 and the 328i/M3 3.0 gearbox (which I beleive goes on with an E30 M3 prop) which gear linkage will be needed? I've got a bit lost.

I used the E36 M3 gearstick and IIRC, the M20 shift arm and selector rod.

Im 99% sure that I used the M20 parts. I know 100% that I used the M20 shift arm (the bit that goes from box to body) and I know I used whichever was the shortest selector rod (M20 or E36 M3) so the gearstick (E36 M3) was centered front to back. With the longer selector rod, the gearstick hit the center console in 1st, 3rd, 5th and Rev.
