My 316i has this 'issue'.........

When on part throttle, accelerating from a junction, it doesn't accelerate smoothly. It doesn't 'jerk' (like me), it accelerates, then drops slightly, then back to normal, then holds back again, then goes, then holds back. Alternating every second or so.

On full throttle, it's fine.

You can see the MPG meter moving down slightly, then back, then down then back, in synchronisation with the feeling of holding back.

I was thinking possible O2 sensor?

Any other ideas? It's fu**ing annoying. :)

I think you would get a much better responce in the technical menu.

Hope you get it sorted

Cheers mate,

But it's not an E30!

Heh!

No problem Mark.

My guess of oxygen sensor makes slight sense, because the way I understand it, at wide open throttle, the values are taken out of the equation, and on part throttle it could be measuring rich/lean rich/lean and playing with the mixture causing the hesitation.

Or AFM/MAF possibly. Arrrgg!

Still linked drifts on smallish wet roundabouts, videos to follow. :)

That's possible too.

It's coming up to a rubber band change too.

Ahh yes, the dreaded m43 rubber band change. Make sure you get the right stretchification!

Pacerpete tells me I can get an industrial strength one for an extra 23bhp. Taking it to 26bhp.

I would tread carefully with those. They are actually designed for dual overhead hamster engines, and will cause increased fatigue on most single hamster units.

Don't forget the resistor on the interior light delay to release a mighty 0.4hp.

I thought all you E36 owners had done this by now

It does it occasionally, sometimes worse than others. Identical symptoms.

Sometimes it's perfect.

It's coz it's a E Dirty Sex... it likes a bit of rough every now and again.

No idea what it is. Worth trying the leads though, like Chris says.

If I 'try' leads and MAF I'll be about £300 down!

Will do at some point.

For now though, a stupid respray on the Civic is top priority!

i've known of identical symtoms on albeit larger engined e36s (323 and 328) which have turned out to be the maf.. but as you said not cheap!! if you know anyone unfortunate enough to also own a e36 316  then maybe you could 'borrow' theirs!

Andy,

No rush, but if you could grab one and send it that'd be great. At least to elimate it!

Also need the part number on the air flow meter itself! There are two types on the 316i. It IS a 316i, isn't it?? :?:
