I have the chance of an 1992 M50 engine from an E34

Is this the non-vanos one ?

I think the Vanos engines (TU) are from 93 on, so its most likely a non Vanos.

Is Vanos an added issue when putting it in an E30 opposed to a non-Vanos unit? (regardless of faults!)

No difference at all as regards fitting it - but it makes a real difference to the performance!

Really!

There's a cheap 5 series on ebay at the mo with FSH, but it's a 1994 so I guess that's a vanos unit.

Just went round to nextdoor and they known a bloke with a J-plate with a blown autobox, they're not sure if it's M50 or not though.

Another quick question Brian, what flywheel/gearbox/prop/diff combination are you using?

I've read that with about 7mm off the M20 flywheel will allow it to fit to the newer 2.5 block, I'm guessing the same goes for the 2.8 block? Then it would just be a case of finding a 3.64 LSD or similar.

Diff is ex. 525e. (Got the 2.7 bottom end as well, for a future project)
Flywheel and gearbox are from a non vanos E36 320 that was lying around, and prop is a standard E30 325 one, just about closed up as far as it will go.

vanos unit presents a problem when turbo charging and using megasquirt.
