Crossing my fingers for you that its not the heater matrix, you havent been playing with anything in the dash have you? My cousins one went last december and he went without a heater for a good few months as he couldnt afford to fix it!

or the heater duct could have come out? (no idea how it would fall off but you wanted as many suggestions as possible)

Simplest one is the dial that you turn to chose the temparature, it may turn on the outside but you could pull it out and test if its turning on the inside?

Do you hear the 'clunk' when turning the dial from cold to hot?

No airlocks in the heater matrix perhaps?
There are two types of drivers: Those who dislike BMW drivers, and those who drive BMWs.

check the heater valve by where it enters the matrix. they normally fail open so water can circulate round the matrix. mine was a bit iffy on my 316 so i tapped it gently and it started sending water round the matrix again. its been a while since i did that but if i remember rightly the bit u need to look for is on the left hand side of the matrix on one of the pipes. hope this helps, 2 minute fix if it is. good luck

ed325i might have one as I left it in the dash I sold him, failing that I will be taking one out of my 318i sunday or wednesday if you can cope with the cold till then! (unless I can get it out without taking the dash off completely then i may be able to get it tomorrow if someone shows me how I take it out!)

not really had a chance to have a look at the bypass valve in my bm if at all it has one but i had exactly the same thing in an old mk2 golf, it was that, the bypass valve, it's basicly a valve that stops alot of pressure building up in the heater matrix and in return cracking and pissing out everywhere inside the car, i'll have a look see if i see anything i reconise in my engine bay and look it up in the haynes

Very first thing to check is that the heater hoses are on the right way around.
The way that looks the most "correct" is the wrong way. Hose from the back of the cylinder head goes to the lower stub.
