where is the temperature gauge supposed to sit in normal running.

my 87 325i takes a fair amount of time to warm up then sits on the mark between the middle and cold.

i think the thermostat may be on the way out

thought it should be something like that. most manufactures (except frenchies) have it in the middle of the range.

thanks.

just popped on GSF and ordered the stat, and all 3 gaskets for the exhaust seen as it's blowing somewhere at the engine.

I think the blue sends temp to ECU, brown to the gauge - but what do I know, my temp gauge is a lying git!

true, but in summer it was sitting slightly above the 1/4 line. now it's slightly below and on my drive to work it won't even get up there.

on bosch stuff Blue is usually the ECU sensor and Brown Temp.

only want to sort it out really because with it not warming up properly the ECU will see cooler then normal coolant temps and enrich the mixture

Same sensors, just much harder to access. They're under the inlet manifold.

Anywhere between the two coloured zones is normal operating temperature. The whole centre section of the gauge only covers a few degrees, and anywhere there is fine.
Most E30s run between just above the quarter mark and the half way mark.

my coolant temp went mental a little while back and it turned out to be a crack in the neck of the expansion tank.

Now it sits on about 1/2 or just under, must admit though sinc ethe 6 branch went on the engine temp has seemed a little bit higher.

In that case you need a new 'stat as well.
E30 heater should be giving usefull heat after about a mile.

I've changed my expansion tank (it's turned brown and sprouted leaks), and once the temp gauge worked, it'll sit on half most times. Idling in traffic will push it about a couple of millimeters to the right.

put the new stat in yesterday, warmed the engine up, bleed the system, ran some more and rebled to make sure.

went out today engine was out of the cold section in less then half mile then up just under half on the way past the house on the way to the cinema where is stayed regardless of heater use.
