The lights on my autobox have gone out, the orange one's that indicate which gear you are in. i have the gear numbers on both sides of mine, i have not seen another e30 auto with them on both sides, normally just on the drivers side. i am guessing there are small bulbs under the casing, would i be right and if so are they easy to first get to and then replace? Yes i have checked the fuse's incase your are wondering and all fine.
as ever any help would be much appriciated.
Cheers

The light is fixed to the selector lever and moves with it.
The wires to the lampholder bend every time the lever is moved, and eventually break internally. Could also be just a fused bulb of course.

mine used to come on and off at will
prob as brian says when you shifted the wires would bend and it would go off but then come back on when in neutral
