nick those injectors should be fine.
i bought them off andy335touring. he had them ultrasonic cleaned.
as for the poor fuel economy.
lift your right foot slightly
they are piss poor on petrol though regardless

they are **** poor on petrol though regardless

the noise is really pissing me off but like i said if its serious another cheapo 535 is never far away.
it would clearly be madness to lift my right foot in the quest for fuel economy

the cruise control helps a lot if im just piddling about town though....if my obc is to be believed im averaging 26 between cruise control and thrashing the life out of it....not bad i thought but i think it will do better once i stop it running rich.

this is one of the only places in the world where we can be happy to get over 20mpg!!!!

Man, it is depressing seeing the trouble you are having mate. Any luck with sorting it out yet? You said your chip arrived - what did you get and what did it cost? I am looking at a chip from Germany at the moment. I still dont understand the reports about bad fuel economy some of you guys are experiencing - I am consistently getting around the 28mpg out of mine. Admittedly most of my driving is highway and 100km/h speed country roads and I find I dont have to give it much accelerator to do the legal speeds, but I also enjoy a few spirted bursts along the way.

This week I've compression tested it and closely inspected the camshaft lobes and all seems ok there.
My chip is from Sal at the Zone shop, cost Ԛ£85 and certainly made a good difference. When I've got it running better I'm sure the difference will be even greater.
My fuel consumption is usually bad, I do lots of short journeys as I only live 7 miles from work! I haven't done any very long trips since I've been measuring my mpg.
I'm going to try changing the temperature sensors and check my camshaft timing this weekend. Might try another fuel pump too.

If you have put a custom cam in it just could be your cam timing. Did you have any amount shaved off your block or head? The E34 heads are very sensitive to having anything shaved off them - you may need an adjustable cam sprocket.
Oh and by the way - do you get any sleep? Everytime I check on the zone you are logged in.
even when none of the other UK guys are online.

I did have a tiny amount taken off the head, not to deliberately increase compression, just to make sure it was flat and no more.
I didn't realise adjustable camshaft sprockets were available for the M30 engine! Where can I get one?

No problem mate. Looking forward to hearing how yours goes when it is all sorted
.

Me too!
I get another grey hair every time I think about it!!!
I'm sure I'll get it sorted soon. Hopefully in time for a quarter mile session at Santa Pod before the last one of the year!

I've been the luckiest bloke in the whole flippin' world!!!
I decided today to check my camshaft timing.
When I built the engine the timing marks / bolts didn't quite line up, either slightly out of line one way or on the next tooth along slightly out the other way. So I guessed.
Today I moved it to the next tooth round.
Idle is now smooth, it pulls like a train
and no longer rattles like the valve clearances are too big.
This can only mean one thing (and a local engineer who I know well and who has built M30s before agreed), that my rattle was valves touching pistons!
I have been revving this to 6000+ rpm regularly and have done 800 miles like it! And no signs of damage at all!
Anyone want me to time up an M30 for them ?
Got to find out when the next run what you brung day at Santa Pod is now!!

Well done dude, i'm chuft you've got it sorted and pulling as well as you hoped it would.
Mine was the same, go for one tooth and it's slightly out then go for the other and it's still not quite right
Makes me wonder about mine

It also makes me think that an adjustable cam pully might be a good idea and weather having the head skimmed thows the cam timing out, my head is still in spec thickness wise and i've used the thicker head gasket ?
Thanks dude!
You'd know about it if it was wrong!
Sounds horrendous and the engine really shakes on idle. And it's a pig to drive in traffic.
Am I right in thinking you are using a Schrick 284 camshaft ?
I wonder if that throws the timing marks out a bit. ?
I'm very relieved!
Can't wait to give it a proper test drive tomorrow!

Yeah I had a tiny bit taken off the head, just to make sure it was flat. Could be that. Didn't know you could get thicker head gaskets! Who does those ?
I've seen a link to an American site who do adjustable pulleys, I'll try and find it if you don't have it.

Yeah, a 284, it could be the cam i guess ?Am I right in thinking you are using a Schrick 284 camshaft ?

You can get them from the dealer for about 80 quid or like me order it from ECP for about 45 quid. Standard gasket is 1.7mm compressed and the thicker one is +0.3mm.Didn't know you could get thicker head gaskets! Who does those ?
I've got it cheers, it's where i got my cam/springs/rockers/spring retainers from, it was the only place i could find at the time.I've seen a link to an American site who do adjustable pulleys, I'll try and find it if you don't have it.
Cool.
There is a run what you brung at Santa Pod next weekend!
If it isn't raining - I'm there!
Anyone else up for it ?

what kind of "mending" ?

Damn you're LUCKY!!This can only mean one thing (and a local engineer who I know well and who has built M30s before agreed), that my rattle was valves touching pistons!

Not that kind tonight! Just a bit of attention!Andy335Touring wrote:what kind of "mending" ?
My back really aches from bending over doing the engine (I have a history of back issues). If the bonnet opened the right way it wouldn't be quite so bad. I'm quite crippled now!
Thanks m10man!
Adjustable does seem a good plan.
I wonder if you can get to the adjusting bolts just by taking the rocker cover off. If it's a radiator out job every time you adjust that would be a right pain!

you lucky git!!!!
i've had the same thing once with big inlet valves and a rally cam in a MK2 RS2000. it left little shiny marks on the pistons but didn't damage anything!
i modified the pistons for a but more clearance!
the cam had 13.3mm of valve lift and a 322 degree duration!
that and a severely skimmed head (17:1 compression) and +2mm inlet valves, it was going to happen wasn't it!!!

Just an update!
As some of you following this thread might know I bought a G-Max -60mm suspension kit from a fellow zoner recently. I got it fitted this week and so far I'm quite impressed. The car looks so much better at it's new ride height and it is now level! It is a little stiffer than the other Dutch crap I got off Ebay but isn't too harsh for me on bumpy roads, for myy preferences it's just about right.
While I was at it I fitted it with E46 rear top mounts from BMW.
Also looks like I've sorted my oil leak tonight. I had a slighly leaky oil pressure switch and I was a bitt too cautious when I bolted the sump on not to crush the gasket. I tightened the sump bolts a little and it seems ok so far!
Today I also ordered Powerflex rear beam bushes (one of mine is clunky) and a set of Powerflex trailing arm bushes. Then the back end will be just about sorted.
All in all a productive week and weekend for me!
Here's what it looks like now -

Gareth - if your'e still thinking about getting a G-Max kit I could come down and take you for a spin sometime if you wish.?

Thanks! And no probs, just let me know when you want a ride!
I've been busy today too.
I painted those kidney grilles - that you kindly donated me - black and fitted those, changed the oil and filter and fitted a new stereo head unit as the one that came with the car refused to play cd's.
I've got a week off work in november so I want to get lots more done then too.
And get myself into a bit more debt at the same time!!!

I went to my local BMW dealer today to get a few little bits and pieces (nothing exciting!).
One of the bits I wanted was a pair of strut top bearing dust caps (the little plastic push in ones under the bonnet).
There are apparently two types so the parts bloke said he'd come and measure which one I needed.
When he opened the bonnet, the look on his face was a picture!
It went from confusion, to disbelief, to amusement!
Priceless!
