m60 swap ( UPDATE 29.04.07)

Started my m60 swap today and have pulled the engine and box.

Do i need to keep the carbon filter on the fuel system ?

Car will have twin cats when its done.

From what I understand the carbon canister serves two purposes, to keep positive pressure on the fuel tank, and to also absorb the petrol fumes, so they don't linger and end up entering the passenger cabin.

Dropped engine and autobox in today to see what the clearances are like

engine clearance from front to back are sweet but side to side is a bit tighter but still ok.

Exhaust manifolds should be interesting to say the least.

Looks like some tunnel bashing rqd to get the box into correct position.

You don't need the canister - the fuel tank vent can stay inside the front left suspension turret like it is now, but you will have to block the hole in the inlet manifold and retain the solenoid valve, or replace it with a resistor.
Not familiar with the M60 management, but if it includes a tank pressure sensor, you'll have to fool that ECU input as well.

i would expect it to go around corners fine. the weight's nice and far back compared to a straight six, and the M60's all aluminium.

For the Cats, that doesnt matter. Its related to the age of the car, not the age of the engine.

Its not actually that much worse Stu. To start with the engine is banked as it is a V and so therefor is only four cylinders long not 6 so to speak; so the mass of the engine is spread sideways and forwards.

Are they alloy or iron blocks btw?

Great project! I remember an M3 lookalike at Ace once with a 4.0 litre V8 in from an 8 series built by two australian heroes and the thing ripped! was also in TBMW , il try and dig out the photos

Nick , no m8 but due to lack of Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£ and availability of manaul box's

i have decided to use the auto seeing as i have the whole donor car.

When funds are ok and the correct box comes along i may change it.

Too be honest though i dont mind driving auto so long as they are big engined ones.

I'm no track day star and not fussy for going round corners fast but straight line hopefully will be

No dude its from an e32 and is definately a 4 speed.

If I can read English, anything with the engine number ground off registered 1992 - 2002 will only have to meet the 3.5%/1200ppm test.

If five speed g'box is acceptable for you look for the g'box from 730i E32.

Well you will be shocked to know that
it weighs more than a M30 and we know
how much that affects the handling in a E30.

At the end of the day i already said i'm not interested in going round corners fast.

And i had an m30 touring earlier this year and it really doesn't make much difference at all to the handling.
