Heard good things about them!! Nearly bought a touring actually before i started spending on my e30!!
Read somewhere that the turbo can go bang if you tune them too much!! Dunno how true that is though!!

Over 100000 miles lots of expensive bits are on borrowed time and more importantantly if driven 'enthusiasticly' they are not that economical. Not enough to warrant the huge premium you have to pay over a similar age / spec petrol turd.

They're okay until they go bang - and they do. With regular driving and standard BMW service schedules the turbo needs changing at 100'000 miles as a service item. If it lets go it's a 3 grand bill - turbo, intercooler and first catalyst as well as removing and cleaning all the oil and shit out of the inlet manifold. If you're really unlucky bit of turbo get into the engine.
Inectors leak - don't even think about rechipping one as the injectors can literally explode without warning, soaking everything with diesel - entire underside and the rear tyres included.
Air mass meters, intake pressure sensors, boost pressure sensors etc etc etc.
Possibly the last really good diesels were the old pre TDCi Mondeos and 306/405 Diesels, old technology and thus reliable and easy to fix. This modern stuff is a disaster area.

Hmmm.

Sounds like an avoidable one.

Shame, because in theory it's almost the perfect car.

There'll always be good ones, and there'll be Friday afternoon cars.

Let's not forget the diagnostics on these parts, not just the parts+fitting.

Cheers chavs!

A really, really good diesel car for peanuts - Rover 75 2.0d. It uses the old 136 bhp 320d engine which was a good unit and the rest of the car is decently put together and reliable. About Ԛ£3000 gets a really decent one.

Anybody got one of these late diesel clutches lying around? The ones with about 20 splines.

Theyre really really expensive and a dealer only part

what on earth has rechipping got to do with injector life

....er, vastly increased fuel pressure? :D

These are common rail! Rechipping makes the pump work harder. On the old M41 and M51 stuff (E34 525td, E36 318tds etc etc) you could either do a remap by increasing boost and fuelling or use a Hopa unit to raise the pump pressure until the fuelling matched standard boost. On the common rail stuff you're increasing both again. The injectors can leak like a bastard on a standard engine with a few miles on never mind a rechipped one. 3.0d's that stink of diesel are very common and new injectors are a couple of hundred quid a pop. I've seen a 530d (chipped) when an injector went nuts and flooded one cylinder. It went on to five pots and locked up when the cylinder literally filled with diesel and it bent a con rod.

why would the injectors explode if car is remapped??

thes cars are a true weapon

ive owned one a 330d sport

remapped.509nm of torque.

auto is best way to go without a doubt.

mine got nailed and i got 31 round town and 43 plus on a run

my advice is dont fit a tuning box as these only increase fuel pressure and will cause problems

but remapping is fine.

remapping alters when injectors open and for how long along with other stuff

done properly ther is no need to increase the fuel pressure

I remapped a 330d on Monday - I was very very surprised to see how it went. Real weapon!

Blowing up injectors - I think this may be the case with some of the tuning boxes which literally just took the piss with the fuel pressure.

I've seen two 3.0d's with injector problems after remapping - one by vanAaken with a Tuning Box(X5) where an injector split and dumped God knows how much diesel and the 530d with an ECU remap that fucked the engine when an injector stuck open. Argue all you like - but this is what can happen! :D
Remember these are Bosch plastic injectors, not the old steel ones that screwed into the head on the old tds stuff. If the injector doesn't spilt, the rubber O ring will. You find out what the fuel pressure is on one of these...........

Oh and my mate's (Neil from AllGears - Ian 332Sport knows his as well) 530dA E39 has two smelly injectors following a remap. Not leaking badly yet but you can get a good whiff of it. As usual it's an excellent engine ruined by cheap and nasty Bosch rubbish attached to it.

this is true. Diesels run ridiculously high fuel pressures due to the loss of spark plugs. In real units its about 1350 bar!
