Cos they sound better than 4 pots
Inline 4pot engines are inherantly rough, inline 6 engines are inherantly smooth
You get more torque for a given capacity from the average 6pot
They're smoother in traffic.......
Did I mention they sound great?

as said before - the sound they make is enough to validate it. there are other reasons but i dont need to go into them.

4cyls are for revvy drivers who are about 18 and ragg the shite out of them.
Bar the M power engine which are race spec designed and god damm beautiful when you hear a good one.
6 cylinders are for touring and occasionaly going past something with no effot and grace
its like the question why go V8 for power and the noise !!!
is down to personal opinion

Thanks for offending all us 4 pot owners, nice one.michealewk wrote:4cyls are for pussies[bar the m3] 6cyls are for real drivers there is no comparison the difference is night and day
I seem to be a freak around here but for me handling/cornering is more important than power, I just don't see a 6 pot keeping up with me around the twisties. I have a 318is and I've driven my mates 325i Sport (admitedly with tired suspension,) and the difference on the corners "is night and day!"
Ultimately it all depends on what your after at the end of the day. I concede that for the vast majority of people the 6 pot is a better choice. I prefer my cornering and my fuel economy to go with it.

My car used to be a 1.6, and understeered like a bitch, now I have a big heavy 6 pot, it doesn't front slide so much, so I would say the handling is better...
Although you do notice the extra weight, and when I first drove it, it felt like there was so much weight it wouldn't go round the corner!

'16v 4-pots are great in race cars, or if you want to drive like you're in a race the whole time. Otherwise 6's are the way forward'
I don't drive my car to the limits of its cornering ability on the road (& I'd question the sanity of those who do), but if that's what you want, then a 4-pot makes sense. So, far from being for 'pussies', I'd say an iS is ideal for nutters!

My first E30 was my 325i Sport - I had to have a 6pot just for the noise.
I recently was looking for another E30 and started looking at the 318iS. There just wasnt any worth buying - they were all rusty, rough as hell and well over priced.
I bought a 318i touring - it was cheap and 4pot so wouldnt cost the earth to run (or so I thought) but within a month I had fitted the 2.5 6cyl from my Sport (not actually through choice though).
If I wanted something that goes round corners like a go-cart, I would have bought a go-cart.
Its all down to what you want - each car has its merits, but theres no real reason to buy one or the other, just personal preference.

BMW never made a decent engine for the E30. Even the M engine is not all that. They only started making decent engines with power to be proud off from the M E36 onwards. Back then i guess they were fantastic, but now in the moddern day, they are dated and way too under powered and most modern crap cars like Saxo's and the likes would leave you standing at the lightswhy 6 pot?
noise, power, smoothness
I guess if you're just talking from the draivability side being smooth then cool, but i certainly dont rate the power of the E30

The 2.5 M20 ain't a bad engine, even by today's standards! Makes more power/litre than the VR6 motors

No disrespect to the S14 but the bimmer sixes have a sense of occasison way beyond that of almost any 4pot (even in comparatively torque-light 2.0 M20 guise.). the older ones aren't the last word in power but they are modre than respectable, especially in an E30. Be honest, would you rather have a FWD bit of tat with a personailty-free four banger or a mans car?
As has been mentioned, any arguments for or against are academic as personal preference is the only criterion.

I had a 4pot 318 cab a few months ago and whilst i didn't think it was partuicularly fast or powerful, it drove quiet nice and that did suprise me. I sold the car a few weeks after buying it to buy the Msport. Not cause the car was bad, but cause it was better for me to spend my money modding a Msport as oppose to a 318cab

Dont worry Mr Lee. I'm sending the rims back to Image to have the width reduced bu half an inch. I can run 245/35/17's then, but thanks anyway mate

Well it's a problem if you cant find rubber to fit you
I'd rather loose a little girth so i can slam the bitch. It might also make my 6pot a bit faster

Booty why is'nt the S14 a good engine?
A reliable 93hp per litre is good today how about 15-20 years ago.

Yeah, I should of said that I was more than happy with how the touring drove, before the little 4pot went bang that isbootyman wrote:I had a 4pot 318 cab a few months ago and whilst i didn't think it was partuicularly fast or powerful, it drove quiet nice and that did suprise me.
There was nothing wrong with it all and it suited my needs just fine. Was a little thirsty if pushed hard, but then its not an engine to push hard. It would still be a 4pot today if I could be arsed to fix it - it was just easier to fit the 6pot
