More progress today
Got the M50 out,bit of a mission but got there in the end


Then stripped of the air con pump and bracket and engine mountings and gave the whole thing a good clean up and put the new mountings on



Tomorrow ill fit the new servo and mounting rubbers and maybe get the engine sat in the engine bay
(thats the plan anyway)
Can someone confirm(Dan

That ive bolted the new mounting arms in the right position?
Also is it best to remove the now redundant air con pulley?
Can i go ahead and put the engine in place BEFORE doing any work to the M52 manifolds(which arrived today by the way
),will i be able to get them in and out with the engine in?

You may as well leave the aircon pulley on the front, it wont do any harm - I keep looking at mine and thinking it could run a 'charger
You will need the engine in place to do the manifolds, you wont be able to get them fitting right if youre doing it by eye. And that way you can trial fit them before you weld them up for good.

I think thats the only reason I havnt fitted my air-con yet,
As soon as I saw the bolt pattern on that compressor bracket my thoughts were tainted
As close to the original position as possible, but anywhere in the downpipes should be ok. The Lambda needs to get up to temp to work properly.eko wrote:One more thing,does it matter where in the exhaust the lambda sensor goes,ie front/middle or back?

Test of patience getting the M50 out today too!
Going to see if i can buy some nice stainless steel tubing tomorrow,thinking about 3 inch single bore!
Plan in my mind right now is to run both down pipes into single 3in then running into twin exit Scorpion backbox ive just bought for Ԛ£25
All Tig welded to the highest standard
Not sure how loud it will be yet but if its that bad ill put another box in the middle somewhere!

Started of the day by going to local scrap yard and picking some stainless for my exhaust!
Opted for 70mm(2 3/4in) top notch 316 dairy pipe,my mate is going to fabricate it next weekend,his standard of TIG welding is amazing so should be pukka when done

Then made a start getting the engine in,bit awkward getting it lined up for the mountings but still not as bad as i thought it was going to be


Well happy now,starting to see some real progress

Fitted gearbox mount,throttle cable,power steering pipes and bottle mounted,heater matrix plumbed in,clutch bled and more i cant think of.
Main jobs to do know to at least get it running are
Prop
exhaust
radiator
elec fan
air box?
gear linkage
and last but definately not least wire the M50 to the M20,but think ill put a seperate post up for advice on this!
Overall though im happy with the way its going,not really hit any major obstacles as yet,but then again its only the electrics that give me the jitters-hopefully Danthe or Brianmoore will be my saviours here!

Did you notice which size of output flange you have on the gearbox?
If your planning on using an M30 airbox id advise you use an M20 radiator, the tank on the side of other rads gets in the way of the airbox intake.

Going to try a E30 325i rad for now!
Not sure about the M30 airbox,not even thought that far ahead yet
Although looking today there is a sensor? which fits in the original M50 box,2 pipes and elec connector on-what do i do with this?

Whats the measurement accross the bolt hole centres of the rubber? I need to check one and I cant remember the large diameter.
Cut the plug out and replace with a 64 Ohm resistor to trick the ECU into thinking the valve is still there. (Brianmoooore takes credit for this plan)
Then just cap off the hole thats left in the throttle body

This is the only electrical connection I can think of in that area

The plug is on the same part of the loom extansion as the MAF plug

Went to the scrapyard today and picked up a new looking M20 radiator and a nice electric fan!
The fan came of a Mitsy Galant 24v and has got loads of kick in it
Easy to mount it too,as it sits in there perfectly,just secured it to the front crossmember by a couple of self tapping bolts and made a little L shaped bracket to fix it under the front panel!


Mounted the radiator too but need to get the bottom mounts for it cause i forgot to pick them up
but it is plumbed in using the original O/S inner wing mounted expansion tank!
Ordered the E36 gear linkage parts from the dealers aswell,should be in on Wednesday
