I was wondering is this is possible?. I suppose anything is possible.
Starting point 324td?.
Now this is a engine conversion, I would like to see.

3.0ltr diesel from the E46?
Its been done. One was in my area in an E30 M3 shell, not sure how well it was done but hell did it go
There have been a couple on Ebay as well.
Ive thought about it for the touring and then keep the Sport for the weekends. But would the 330D out perform the S50 powered E30?

the e90 engine is better than the one in the e46,
e46 = 204bhp 410Nm
e90 = 230bhp 500Nm
should be very cool

what about the old 6 pot shitter out of the 325tds (E36)
more readily available and from Omega taxis i've been in with these engines there's a reasonable amount of shove. I've driven an X5 diesel and they are lively for an oil burner, had 130 out of the X5 without any complaints

i think the x5 3.0d engine is the same as found in the later (possibly earlier) e46, good engine, they go well, been in one many a time, supposied to be wicked with a live remap according to c76 jon who had botht the x5 and the e46

Why not get the engine out of the 535d twin turbo? i believe it's a 3.0 6 cyl with 272bhp and 413lb ft of torque, a nice amount of power, not too much, and lets not forget it can do 0-60 in 6.5s in an the E60, i think you could get 6.0s from an E30, maybe less. 35mpg though, not the best, but still ok.
I bet THAT would be tricky to convert.

I reckon you would be into a few grand on the re-loom alone.
It would be good, we have an x5 with the new diesel and it goes extremely well, 265hp and 520Nm is appealing.

It's nothing new to have twin turbos you know, the Mazda RX7 had these in the mid 90's, and they worked well. I believe VW have made a new Golf GT 1.4 that has a supercharger and turbo, where the s.charger helps spin the turbo up, nice idea huh.

Twin turbo setup was long ago mastered by the japs, but most people think the advent of the twin turbo setup with inline 6 engine on a standard production car started with the supra in the mid 90's. Wrong, they had been at it since the mid 80's, but often with cars which never officially came to the UK.
The MK2 Soarer of 1986 vintage had a 2 ltr inline 6 twin turbo setup, plus touch sensitive TV screen providing TV, climate control functions and other.
Back to the twin turbo thing, the earlier configuration was for twin-turbo running in parallel, so they both spool up simultaneously, therefore the usual lag and then wooaaaahhh, the TT supra in MKiv guise had the sequential setup so you got one at low revs and then another almighty shove at around 4K.
The power outputs of the new 3 series with twin-turbo setup is nothing newsworthy as far as I'm concerned

but it is a step forward for bmw, last time they made a turbo powered engine was with the 2002tii? (or was it the M745iA for SA?) that was a long time ago, bmw have broken a long standing tradition by producing a turbocharged petrol engine, i wonder what rule they will break next? produce a front wheel drive car maybe? i hope not, it's the bmw traits that make it stand out for me, they have golden rules, another being the 50/50 weight distribution rule on all cars.
