But the top "blue" aircon switch only switches on when the direction levers are set in a certain way. Nothing towards the windscreen and the mid and/or lower vents must be open.

You sure? I'm pretty sure mine works no matter where the slide controls are.

Yes mate ... if the control to the windscreen is even slightly open it should switch off the ac ... something to do with the windscreen cracking.
Other vents have to open or I get no blue light.
Says the same in the user manual too I think

thats only on certain (probably uk) models. both mine have factory A/C and work in any position. and to confirm the lights only light when on. also on both mine if the recirculate button (yellow) one is turned on the fan will run and the A/C compressor will run even without the AC switch on.

I cant see this happening, i would want AC on while im trying to demist the screen as the AC dries the air very fast and clears the screen better than with the AC off.

Mines works with any sliders open/closed. But i do have Climate control, so it might be different because on mines only the lower slider has a circuit board attached to it to sense the position of the vent.

easiest spot for the "climate" ( very loose term... ) is an extra small bore vacuum take off near the check valve on the servo supply line, should dissapear into the bulkhead.

Regarding the switch illumination, I still need to have a good look and see what's possible. As standard they only light up when you press the button.

As far as the A/C only operating with the sliders in a certain position. This is a pre/post facelift thing. Early cars need the sliders in a certain position, but post facelift cars will operate in any position.

Cheers,

Ian.
