Wen on range, press the 1000 and 1 buttons at the same time, let's see how much fuel it thinks is in the tank.

Had up to 390 out of a tank in a 325, driving rediculously conservativly though.

Cabs don't do economy, especially on the motorway!
Matt T, I'd keep going until the light comes on, but keep a can of petrol in the boot.
I think Brian Moore (the electrical god on here) says he's never seen a faulty one so you've nothing to lose by finding out if yours is working or not

According to the manual you should have 1 gallon left when the light comes on.

yep, takes a leap of faith to get that fuel light on for the first time, like playing "fuel light bingo" as clarkson once put it.
check this out for fuel economy, last £30 i put in the soarer i got 130 miles, not sure what that is in MPG, daren't try to work it out

Ha ha I'll do it for you, that's 17.7 MPG @ 90p per liter
Which is 23.07p per mile!

lol! makes my 35mpg in the touring look stunning
and Matt, keep driving til the light comes on, and keep a can of fuel in the boot.
I'm now at the stage where i'll only fill the car when the light comes on.
dont run it too far or you may draw the crud out of the tank

Are you sure? I've heard it says 1.5 gallons, though I've never checked myself.
I was trusting the 1.5 gallon idea yesterday when I did 59 miles with the light on
Got me to the cheap petrol OK though (well, cheaper than the motorway services

)!

Page 21 of the manual states:
FUEL GAUGE
The telltale lamp comes onto indicate that there are approx. 6 litres (1.3 Imp Gal) of fuel remaining in the tank.
So we are both right

hmm, don't think i've bought any fuel at 90p/litre for a while Dave. Leave the red diesel alone farm boy

But to be honest, i put fuel in when the light comes on, which is when it has 5 ltrs left in it, alternating between normal u/l and super stuff.

My fuel light only comes on below the "empty" mark, is this normal or does it mean i have less than the 6l left?

That's normal Ben - well it's the same on my 2 anyway.
I don't see a problem with waiting for the light to come on - less petrol = less weight = more speed

surpised you've not investigated the old chip fat diesel way yet mate, that and an old xantia for £100 off ebay and some cheap motoring, allowing the funds to be directed to E30 rightness.

And oilburners are wrong unless the front wheels are smaller than the back wheels.

fuel light has never not worked for me and i'm on E30's 4 and 5
Widge i did 390 out of a tank in my 325i auto! but it has cruise control, this was about 2/3 m-way @ 60-70mph
6 litres left whne the light comes on, i've managed 50miles with the light on! in the auto too
I've found the OBC's range to be not far off the mark to be fair, and it's estimate on average MPG to be pretty close also

Time for an LPG conversion for you I think!!
If you haven't got the air suspension you can fit 2 50 ltr tanks under the sills.
