Find someone that does OPEL diffs and let them do it for half nothing. The diffs use the same ZF plates. A lot cheaper gotten than off BMW.

Sorry, Vauxhall, OPEL in ireland. I was priced about 450euro for a rebuild to standard BMW 25% spec using BMW parts. I got a 40% rebuild from an OPEL man, using identical plates for the same price, 450. He would have done the rebuild the BMW spec for 250 euro.
He needed to take the car for a few days to do it as the diff casing has to be machined slightly to fit two extra clutch packs in for the 40% build.
Good and tight, good fun.
Anyone that does rally preping etc would be able for it not a bother.

To be honest mate, I wouldn't worry about a bit of whine from your diff. When it starts to do that you know you can still have another 200,000 miles out of it so it is not really a problem is it?

The diff I have is either VERY low mileage or a re-build and whines a tiny bit on over-run. This is probably due to the denser Z Coupé bush and poly subframe bushes though.. I doubt you'd come near to hearing it without them.
Mines a 4.1 which is perfect for the 318is. Comes from an American spec M3.
Will be selling it in coming months..

I have a small case 4.1 slipper on my Is an it whines like a fookin doggie when cold. the pitch gets higher and higher and then randomly stops; after about a mile there is no whine at all until i do donuts etc and make it lock up, then it whines faintly?
Does this merrit a rebuild or is it the usual differentail characteristsics of an e30?

These diffs are effectively bullet proof, I say wait until it goes bang. Same goes for the Getrag gearboxes, they go forever....

Until it does go bang at 60mph on a duel carriageway. Then you'd think why didn't I just get it done...OllieB wrote:These diffs are effectively bullet proof, I say wait until it goes bang.

get that diff out before u f**k it. It's rare u won't find another and it's whining and your doing donuts with it. If it's making noises like u say, there something clearly wrong with it.318-is wrote:I have a small case 4.1 slipper on my Is an it whines like a fookin doggie when cold. the pitch gets higher and higher and then randomly stops; after about a mile there is no whine at all until i do donuts etc and make it lock up, then it whines faintly?

I dont really do that many donuts dude. only the occasional flick out or sideways action when its wet. I never do it when its dry. Also, what do i put in there in the mean time? Ian said he mite be selling his 3.91 slipper soon maybe i should invest in that??Simon13 wrote:get that diff out before u f**k it. The clutch packs dont whine!
The barings on the diff have gone and any good gearbox/diff place should be able to replace those. Thing is they might be using a substandard replacement part which might not be upto the job of 200.000 miles plus.

Ah the joys of a diff!
When the large case 4.10lsd locked I had to have all new bearings made up by a local custom bearing firm, had them made and fitted for Ԛ£120 i think.

hmm,, right,,,, so a whiney diff means its most prob the bearings,,, which costs roughly 150 to sort out?
and other then this they are practically bullet proof.
i remember reading somewhere the small case and large case diffs required some adjustment to something? anyone shed any light on this?? what needs to be changed to get a small case in an orignally large case place?
cheers

u don't want to be fitting a small case diff to a car with a l case. It will die quite quickly
but fitting a l case to s case is ok. It's the prop that needs to be either lenghtened or shortened. I can't remember which way. U can adjust the lenght of it from the middle of it.
U still up for these smoked lights mate? Can bring on monday?
