As I'm going to replace the steering rack, one weekend very soon, and after I complete a fuel pressure check, I might as well replace the front shocks. However does the strut need to be filled with oil on a 316i?

I wouldn't say it's essential, but it's not going to hurt to add some, even if it's just to prevent rust.

Purpose of the oil is to help transfer the heat generated by the damper to the strut that surrounds it, so it can dissipate into the air.

Interesting to note, that if you're fitting gas struts - then the recommendation is not to add oil into the strut housing.
Seems odd - but I followed the bentley manual and added no oil when fitting the Bilsteins

If you mean inverted strut inserts, then the part where the heat is generated is outside of the strut tube anyway.Tzantushka wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2019 11:32 amInteresting to note, that if you're fitting gas struts - then the recommendation is not to add oil into the strut housing.
