The "last" thing on the mechanic's to-do list to get my "new" 1988 ix (w/217,000mi) back home is to change out the oil pressure sending unit. The whole underside of the motor was covered in oil. I powerwashed it, ran the motor for @15 minutes and shut it down. When the oil settled back into the pan, the sending unit was where the oil was seeping from.
Is this sending unit particular to the ix due to the ix's oil pan, or is it a stock part from any 2.5L? Also, is there a special socket needed to get it out? Thanks everyone. If it is a stock part, I think I'll be able to get her back home by the middle of this week.

Is the Oil Pressure Sending Unit on an ix model unique?

If it's the oil pressure switch we're talking about, rather than the oil level sender, then I'd be very surprised if it's any different from any other.
The oil pressure switch from most cars, full stop, will fit, not just BMWs.

Oil pressure switch. The unit is on the block.
Another forum answered that the part on the ix is the same as on the i motors. I just wanted to make sure.
It seems that everything that needs replacing on the ix is specific to that model only (rotors, pads, shocks, struts, etc.)

I would have thought that alot of it would be interchangeable. It would be difficult to tell though if the parts are the same and BMW just lists them with different part numbers. I have always fancied an IX but if the things so simple as brakes are different I don't think I would bother. No wonder they didn't make many if the drive train was basically totally different, seems like an expensive exercise.
