We have a road trip darn Norfolk in the summer ( ? ) and I have been busy collecting parts for a re-vamp of the cooling and electrical systems and have a list here so far;
Radiator
Water pump
Thermostat
Fan
Viscous coupling
All hoses

Arm

I'd say the list needs a trim.
Fan? It's a lump of plastic, and lasts thousands of years.
Never seen a duff E30 coil yet, and the leads and temp. sender are best left well alone, unless they have a known problem.
Cap and rotor dependant on condition after examination, and the only bulbs I'd replace are ones that are showing signs of the glass turning black.
One thing you might do, while the radiator is out of the way, is to check that the crank position sensor hasn't seized in its mount, and can be easily and quickly changed if ever required. It's a good idea to have a spare tucked away on board somewhere as well - it's the one part that you can't anticipate is going to fail, that can't be bodged or bypassed, and will stop you dead.
TBH, I'm not sure I'd do any of this for a trip from Leeds to Norfolk - a 5000 mile European road trip, maybe.
Still haven't done anything about an ISOfix for the E39! Grandson's three months old now, so must get on with it.

The fan has blades missing hence the change , the bulbs (most ) are going black and for the price will be swapped out.
As for the rest, once all of this is done I will have peace of mind and can concentrate on the body a bit more.
Is it worth changing the sensor now whilst I have good access to it ? and where is it ? cant find the part no

THAT'S good point about the crankshaft sensor. might have to look out for a spare.
what about spare set of fuses. and a short length of wire in case the fuel pump relays packs up. find out what pins you need to jump in f/p/r socket. or even spare f/p relay.
jump leads are always handy for making friend,
oh and long extension bar wheel wrench, they are always too tight to remove with the piddly thing in the boot . and a power full torch. hi vis jacket. and a mobile phone lol

The crank sensor (on later M20 engines, at least) is mounted on the front of the engine, pointing down on the toothed wheel fitted to the end of the crank - a cylindrical item bolted to the block.

Mine is the webber M10 and I cant find one on E-bay etc.
Got the Halfords tools and other stuff , fuse`s by the dozens, jump leads to start a bus and also covered for breakdown things even at home or as a passenger.
Keep it coming please , I dont want to miss a trick.

I did a 1200 mile trip to Germany and back in a 1988 E30. Didn't change anything and carried spare bulbs,belts and nothing else.

This is all about getting things right for the future and not this one off.
Up until now, all she has done is local stuff and that will change as me and the wife intend to use her much more in the future so replacing relatively cheap parts now , will let us evaluate what is to do in the future.
I`m here for the long haul......... :D :D :D

i think on your engine there might be 2 crank sensors, check out wiki onhere.

If it's a Weber carbed M10, then we're going back to early '70's technology. The only 'electronic' management on that was the sophisticated OEM carb., and that's been replaced by a mechanical one.
If it wasn't for the electronics replacing the points in the distributor, it would be back to early '60s.
There won't be a crank sensor on this car (except for one purely for diagnostic purposes), nor much of the other stuff that gives known problems on E30s.
The ignition amp. is probably the weakest point on this engine, as regards stopping it running. Even a duff fuel pump can be bypassed by filling the screenwash bottle with petrol, plus a little re plumbing and wiring.
The problem with changing some of the parts that you refer to, is that parts of the quality of the originals are no longer available, especially from ebay and aftermarket suppliers.

If you're going that far, I'd suggest some shoes laces/string in case the throttle cable (or a bracket for something non-important) snaps. (My throttle cable snapped, and I didn't have spare laces/string, so had to be recovered off the side of a dual carriage way in rush hour! Could have been on my way in minutes if I'd had those with me!)

Wedge the throttle stop to give an idle speed of 3000 - 4000 RPM, and off you go. You'll get a few black looks while waiting at lights, and you aren't going to do your clutch any favours, but you'll keep mobile.

Point taken here and I have been careful to buy parts with a name to them also the hoses were from Cotswold on here and just as cheap as e-bay.lol.
It`s more an investment in the car for the future as this car is staying with me for a very long time , I hope and I want it right for future trips as well.

I chose this model with the M10 and Webber for it`s simplicity not for speed (I have a 330ci for that) but for the laid back style of driving it dictates and it`s an engine I know I can work on.
