Bought this as my coolant light would continuously be on even though the coolant was at the correct level. The old sensor was worn and not working properly, but once out the car I could change the check light on or off depending on the position of the cylinder on the sensor.

New sensor in. Light stays on.. Take it out whilst plugged in. Move the cylinder.. Nothing. The light is now just on no matter what I do.

Any advice welcome.

Also, are the check board lights in the center on the roof removable by shorting some pins? I feel like it's quite clever and can sort it's self out? Like it did before with the original one.

You've bought the version that fits in the underside of the coolant tank type that is mounted at the end of the radiator, such as E36 rads. etc., and the E30 M40/42 rad.
Because you're mounting it upside down, the light will be on when the tank is full, and off when it's empty.
As you've noticed, there's a slight difference in length.
