Hi guys,
was out in a mates e30 this morning, and we are getting unusual water pressure, car is not overheating but once you stop/part up you can hear the water dripping from the coolant bottle overflow.

Whats the chances thats his collant bottle lid is faulty? Is there anywhere to check if his car has the recalled lid and if not, can it still be claimed at the stealers?

cheers

Any BMW dealer's records will show if the cap has been changed on that particular car, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's still on that car, even if it has been changed.
If it shows up as not having been changed, they should fit a new one for you, FOC. It's a safety recall, not one related to reliability, so it's still in force,

Does this issue sound like a coolant cap related Brian? Thanks

Sounds more likely the o-rings on the lid are farked allowing coolant out the overflow.

Funny enough Harry I did notice the kid wasn't coming of the coolant bottle smoothly, it was just spinning before I had to pull it off.

Common enough for an O ring to split, but that would result in no pressure in the system, not excessive pressure. Local coolant boiling could also take place with no pressure, which would produce pulsing in the hoses.

JKC BMW in northern ireland are telling me theres no current campaign on this and they have no reason to issue me the recall.

Large yellow disc on the bottom of all replacement caps I've seen, but allegedly there were some issued with a plain black base as well.
Only applies to 1.4 bar caps, across all BMW models that use them, not just E30s.

Thought there was a number on the bottom of the cap.

120 for a recall and 140 for a old style?

The cap had a yellow underside, so guess its the replacement one.

When you went to remove it, you could keep spinning it and spinning it, it would never come of unless you gave it a good tug.

Replacement is needed I guess.
