My E reg 318i (M40 engine) has been standing for about 12-14 months, the engine ran perfectly before being parked up and had just been serviced.
I was planning on changing the oil, give the new oil chance to run down then cross my fingers and start her up. (maybe random idea but would warming the oil help?)
I know its not an engine swap but I am guessing some of your projects stand around for a while so thought this was the best place to ask!

Personally the way i would do it is:
disconnect the ecu (so its not fuelling or sparking)
turn the engine over till the oil pressure light goes out
reconnect the ecu
start it and let it idle for a few mins
then change the oil and drive normally
that way any minor surface rust thats started to form will be in the oil you take out

With or without is fine really, although if the battery is a bit old and tired its a good tip as it turns over more easily.Turbo-Brown wrote:Don't forget to take the spark plugs out before doing the cranking

I would stick some fresh fuel in as well.
Started a 316 M40 up and drove it a couple of weeks ago that hadn't moved for well over two years.
Fresh battery, air in the tyres and a gallon of petrol in the nearly empty tank and it started up like it had been parked up yesterday. Let it idle for half an hour, than drove it 100 miles.

Even cooler when you and your mates don't know anything about cars at age 19, except that big engines=cool!
Sadly, 2.7 litres couldn't mask the inherantly flawed design of the PRV V6

Had an uncle with a mower with old (stale) petrol in, wouldn't start, changed the fuel, straight into life!

I think a lawn mower is a bit different to a car with a proper fuel tank
