That's just half of it though Barry.

Its the Crank, Pulley, Flywheel, Clutch Cover balancing where the benefits will most likely come from.

Watching a 6 cylinder one whip round is eye watering, as all I can imagine is it coming flying off said balancer!

Guys, I'm well aware of the benifits of balancing the rotating parts and have done on previous builds on engines that are inherently poor to start with such as Ford 4 pot donks but on a hand built S38 that's already pretty well balanced and that is not a modified build and not going to see track use, the costs are simply not worth the gains.

To put it simple, the engine is being built to OE spec, a more noticeable gain would be to lighten the flywheel but even that's not going to happen.

If it were a race engine or heavily modified road engine then there would be no question.

It is where all the costs add up though, the 'little' bits at a £100 here and a £100 there.
Is that what janspeed charge as the place I use quoted £475 to do the whole bottom end?

no need for the condescending tone, the benefits far out weigh the cost.

You'll sell this for profit like all of them. I'd wager a balanced bottom end will run drive/nicer compared to a stock engine.

BMW built 1000's of these cars handbuilt or not theres scope for improvement and this isn't a "mod" its what the sensible person would do who is 5 grand into it anyhow and on a full engine rebuild. The place i use charged me £140 for my M20 engine a few years ago. I doubt its anymore than £240 even now.

You've just made £3000 selling wheels and 5 stud setup.

£3000 better kept or spent on something useful! An S38 isn't an M20. When the bits were made they would have been made and balanced to closer tolerances. It took something like 2 days to build these.

There will still be scope for improvement. Maybe not so much in the rods pistons but in the balancing of the crank and moving parts there will be.

I genuinely can't believe that you or anyone else on here would argue against it! Its small change in the grand scale of things

I'm not arguing against the pro's at all, just that it's not necessary to be done with this build and yes ive sold some stuff for decent coin but i have also just had an offer accepted on a bigger house so much money is being sucked up by that!

To even keep this build going to a high standard while all that is going on has been hard enough so to add other costs in that i don't need to is not going to happen.

I'm not replying in a condescending tone, its just some of you are going on like ive never heard of balancing or its benefits.

And yes, it will be sold at some point but i'm going to enjoy it for a while first. :)

For the crank, pulley, flywheel and clutch cover, yes it would be about £120-130+vat. To balance the pistons and rods would be more.

We tend to do it fairly cheaply to get people in the door as they usually do not know we do it + it can lead to other things. Dyno work etc.

Straight sixes do not need to be that well balanced. I'm sure the M engine was well enough balanced when it left the factory.

For once Barry is right. :)

Quality!

But probably true.

Just hope it was built mid week Barry, nobody gives a fuck on a Monday or a Friday.

10/7/1990 was a tuesday but these cars took two weeks to build so who knows when the engine was put together and more to the point, is the build date the beginning or the end of that two week period?

You bought the chain kit yet Baz ?

I would be tempted to have the crank and fly wheel indipendantly balanced to zero, makes a noticeable difference.

Well its full steam ahead with this now!!!! :D

With the M3 out of daily action for the mean time the only working car I have at the moment other that the E46 the mrs mostly uses, is my 325i so instead of spunking money on so other tram, and what with this dragging on it was time to get a move on!

All of the engine parts have now been bought and delivered so today was time to crack on with it.

Image

The crank had the journals polished and was chemically cleaned.

Image

Pistons measured up in spec and had no wear or score marks, these with the rods were also chemically cleaned.

Image

All journals were plasti gauged and were in spec with standard size bearings.

Image

Crank in with new bearings and mains bolts.

Image

Expensive bag of rings!

Image

Pistons, rings and rods assembled.

Image

Image

Slotted in to the freshly honed bores and bolted up to the crank.

Image

New timing chain, guides and oil pump chain fitted.

Image

Timing cover bolted up with the re-plated bolts.

Image

A fairly expensive head gasket. Multi layer steel thicker one from cometic due to the head and block being skimmed.

Image

Head on.

Image

Exhaust studs in and that's it for tonight!

More tomorrow.
