V12 meets E30 Touring

The M70 V12 is a cracking old motor. Not very heavy either - it weighs 529 lbs with the air con pump (495 lbs without) compared to 465 lbs for an M30 3.5 0r 390 lbs for a 325i lump.
It would be daft not to change the sump gasket with the engiune out as it will be impossible to do when it's fitted, and V12 sump gaskets do like to fail. You'd probably get away with an E28 535i rad to start with The V12 isn't that big (no longer than an M20) and because it's a narrow angle V, not particularly wide either.

Bollocks to 6 speeds - I'd be sticking with the 4 speed switchable Auto! Stick it in D at the lights and just floor it. 0-100 in about 13 secs, no lifting off, no gearchanging. Sweet.

little update
started stripping the engine bay this evening.
radiator, air flow meters and filters, header tank and climate control motors. i'll probably go for a lift at the weekend when i have more light.

the biggest open ended spanner i have is 22mm, and it's not big enough for the oil cooler take off pipes. the biggest socket i've got is 64mm, inch drive. perhaps if i'd looked at it long enough with my uri gellar expression it may have undone itself.
i dont own an adjustable!

got the m70 out this weekend, with its autobox.
autobox is off now, got to get a spigot bearing this week so i can trial fit the manual box to the block.
got to get ourselves familiarized with the wiring on the engine first so we can strip the engine wiring down a bit.
there's about 120 wires going to 3 ecu's at the moment

removed the dual fuel pumps out of the e32 tonight and removed the throttle potentionmeter(sp?) (fly-by-wire-throttle).
we've established which multi-plug is for the throttle and the fuel pumps.
all the wires we need are being loaded onto the computer for future reference in case anyone else wants a V12 conversion done!

steering clearance is not going to be a problem ant,
each bank of cylinders has two manifolds, covering three ports each,
just need to source/swap one of the manifolds over to the other bank as their outlets are on the end's of the manifolds and then there's more room than the S62 steering.
i'll take a pic of the steering clearance next week ant, a picture explains it easier

that certainly is a tight fit with not much room to work in, but looking good so far.was there any modification needed to the chassis/crossmember? mine needed some chopping of the front chassis legs ,and thats only a 4 pot! id like to see this one when finished some day.any idea of when you expect to be finished?

well that's an exciting way to look at it

it's common to insure at the same level as the donor car, so not cheap but not silly.

little update,
had the cars here a month now, the way things are going it should be done ahead of schedule.
managed to keep all four manifolds in their existing positions, downpipes are finished. they had to be altered to miss the steering, the gearbox, the rear control arm mountings and the floor of the e30!
engine mountings are finished, just need to be painted.
was going to use an extra large e30 radiator that dips supplied but the top outlet was up against the nearside distributor, so we're now using the e32 radiator, so the front chassis legs have had to be modified to accommodate
it.
so that the hydraulic brake booster can fit, we're moving the hole for the servo about 2" to the nearside, so that it fits between the nearside suspension turret and the offside cylinders intake manifold.
also to be modified, is the bracket that supports the servo, and the bar that links the pedal to the servo.

will a E28 535 rad not work? i looked at using the E32 735i rad on my M30 conversion (as it was mint and free) but it was too wide to fit between the chassis rails, the E28 one is the same except the right hand tank is cut out to avoid the chassis rail, with the bottom hose outlet above the chassis rail (e32 one would be below it).

or does the V12 one need a vastly larger rad?

i've heard ages ago about someone contacting a forklift truck manufacturer for a rad as they use small very high efficiency radiators as they don't get much airflow due to speed!

iirc they'll work out about half the size.
