You can buy sport cats on their own for a low price, anyone who can weld would be able to fit them, just go for a high flow option.

Something like this http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1265103842

The turd should run clean enough to pass an MOT without cats.

Fitting the the other exhaust is an option but as the X pipe is in a completely different place it may have some sort of effect on it

The other option would be to use the cats from it and put them into the correct exhaust ?? Probably more aggro than what it's worth

But it's still a fail if there is no cat there.

they're alot smaller than whats fitted, but i guess its not a bad idea on the whole. I'm probably losing a bit of power because the OE cats are dying/dead anyhow.

I'd rather keep the 3.0 system complete tbh. I could recoup costs of new sport cats with the scrap value of the old ones. I expect they'd get me a good return from the scrapman?!

I sold 2 cats off an E36 320 last year for £100, that was to a 'scrap man' in a transit. Couldn't tell you what they're actually worth if you took them to a metals yard.

Friendly MOT FTW

On a serious note, I wouldn't want to butcher the 3.0's system either simon. I think gutting the OEM cats is the way forward or replace them with some others

as for old cats value, I flogged a pair of cats from my 330i for £60

Well you can see from the pictures that they're big boy cats and 90's BMW cats are well known for getting juicy prices from the scrap man so i've heard

These engines run clean enough to pass emissions on the MOT without cats though?

They should do

As is said, my 330i is clean and I've binned the pre cats in from the manifold

I know of 328i e36's that pass emissions without cats. As long as the MAF & Lambdas are in good order you should be ok

I've got a spare alpina exhuast system but its off an earlier 3.0 litre car. Its main difference is at the front with it X pipe design. They're both the same bore size pipework and i'd wager the cats and rear silencers are the same also.

I'd like to think i can just swap the systems over and it won't make much difference?
I think I can see one lamda sensor after the crossflow on the system on the right.

Where is/are the sensor/s on the other system?

Might make a difference to whether it is a straight swap or not.

I think you should just get some new cats welded in.

Thats because the 3.0 is Bosch/M50 management and only uses one lambda

The 3.2 is Siemens and uses 2 sensors in the manifolds

Fck welding new cats in, mine would not have a problem with the emissions if it was tested on the later regs, and its easy to trick the machine if need be. If the testers a jobsworth tell him the cat is the small middle box
