I've got a brand new pair of 205/55/15 Continental Premium Contacts sitting in a dry lock up.

But for 5 years.

Trash now?

Really?

They've been sat on their side on wheels and magically have not lost any air. They are not breaking part if thats what you mean - still smooth and squiggly - no micro crack.

Was going to use them on the BSS whilst the Alpinas are being refurb'ed but could sell to get rid - no space.

"brand new" and "5 years old" is rather contradictory.

If it's any help, tyres 6 years or older will fail a German TUV check, whether there's visible signs of perishing or not. You might as well serve them on to some unsuspecting punter on eBay.

In all seriousness these sound a lot better than the part worn tyre industry's "deal of the week" malarkey.
And that is legal and money making.....

The way it has been stored sounds like new old stock and has been out of wet and cold.

You ono what I mean bud. They've literally done 10ish miles from the tyre fitter and home. Then in a nine dry warmish garage.

I checked them over and they look and feel as normal. They may actually be nearer 6-7 years old. Anything on the sidewall to tell me year of manufacture?

Great tyre the Conti Premium Contact.

They will be fine for normal road use, I served some rusty steels with tyres not long ago that had been off the car for the last 6 years, carefully stored outside under a hedge :D
God knows how long they had been on the car before hand but the buyer was more than happy to hand over £100

There will be a DOT code on the sidewall, stating DOT then 4 numbers eg 2614 would mean the 26th week of 2014. Conti did make good stuff when the sizes where sensible now it's all ultra low profile the sidewalks split from hard hammering etc....

You could use a durometer (spel?) to check the rubber hardness. You could compare against your other tyres.

Wouldn't worry about it, Just accept the rubber is harder than when new and grip will be lower, especially in the wet.

True the apostrophe in this case is not needed as it's is not a possessive adjective. What was I thinking.

Actually it is. But its is an exception to the possesive rules for apostrophes in English.

Shortening it is to it's does use an apostrophe.

So its it's or is it its?

I thought it was correct at it's as it is possessive (it's own Facebook page) but it could be its.

The ' replaces an 'i',so to write;

'my M42 has its own fuckbook page' is correct.

to write;

'my M42 has it's own fuckbook page' would be in-correct....

it's = contraction = "it is"
its = possessive pronoun = something belongs to it.

Nope. "You've" is also a contraction (you have), as are "he's", "they're" and "we'd".

Still, enough grammar. Your tyres are old and dry, and as others have stated, the compound will be harder and not as grippy. "You'd" be better off serving them to someone else and buying brand new if you want "what's" best for your iS.

I'd rather throw them away than 'serve' them to someone dude.

Explain how 'My M42 has it's own' is not possessive. It clearly is. Yet its also contracted. Maybe its one if those random English rules that has no logic.

Maybe we should talk about the tyres.

I'd use them. My E32 has tyres that are 6-7 year old, and with 6mm tread they're not getting replaced. That's partly my inner tightness, but also due to the fact that they're fine.

It's clearly retarded :D.

Using the contraction "it's" instead of "its" is a sign of not reading enough, or bad schooling, or just laziness. It's never meant "belongs to it", and isn't even an oddity in English grammar. The possessive pronoun "its" is in the same family as "yours, his, mine" etc.

The only time "It's tyres are fine" are when you're talking about this bloke:

Stick em on the rears and go play. Far more enjoyment making them go pop than either risking yourself or an un-knowing buyer and possibly who ever they come in to contact with.

I just fitted some 6 year old bf Goodrich without any problems. Its hard to explain but
I actually quite like the feel of old rubber on the motorcycle, I think it makes me ride smoother.

As I understand it, what damages the rubber over time is exposure to UV light and sitting with weight on, IE on the car.
Caravaners who store them for a prolonged period of time often put the caravan on its legs to take the weight off and also cover the wheels to protect from UV light.

Incidently I used tyre's from a Merc that had sat in a field for 12 years without moving, they never popped :D
