...and the left. Resting the foot on the clutch will cause slippage and therefore increased fuel at certain speeds. Also learn to use engine braking when approaching stops; Motronic cuts off all fuel if the accelerator is at idle but revs are over 1500rpm, which helps eke out a few more drops of motion lotion.reggid wrote:learn to control the right foot

Look a little less at the rev. counter, and a little more at the gauge directly below it, in the same bezel. Learn the art of keeping it top the left.
Could you explain this please?Grrrmachine wrote:Also learn to use engine braking when approaching stops; Motronic cuts off all fuel if the accelerator is at idle but revs are over 1500rpm, which helps eke out a few more drops of motion lotion.
I usually down-shift into corners, but I thought that there was no fuel being fed into the engine whilst your foot is off the accelerator.

Thats pretty much the same as me! I get 40 miles (sometimes just a tad over) to £10 worth of fuel @ £1.30ish a litre, thats round town too.magpie wrote:130 miles on £30 with mixed driving m52 + m50 manifold and bbtb

That's exactly it. "Accelerator at idle" means "foot off the accelerator, so if you shift down then you'll push the engine revs over 1500rpm, cutting off the fuel.Maxtek wrote:Could you explain this please?Grrrmachine wrote:Also learn to use engine braking when approaching stops; Motronic cuts off all fuel if the accelerator is at idle but revs are over 1500rpm, which helps eke out a few more drops of motion lotion.

However, if you coast along with the clutch in but the foot off the accelerator, then the engine will actually idle, which uses fuel. So engine braking/shifting down uses less fuel than rolling/coasting.

I'm not lurking on this forum to learn how to drive or how to read my instrument cluster thank youJF008 wrote:So what can someone do to improve mpg? what are the key areas to look at?
-regular maintenance, oil, spark plugs etc
-check tire pressure
-new engine coolant temp sensor
-leak free exhaust system

I've never known anyone to coast around with their foot on the clutch, unless I've misunderstood something again.

The ONLY way to measure fuel consumption is brim-to-brim the tank at the same pump, same petrol station.
Did mine today 34.22mpg over the last 304 miles.
1986 325i Cab, covered 21633 miles since new.
Cheers

In my 316i I get about 350 miles to about 55L driving A/B roads in midwales. I never drive slow but I rarely hoon it either. Pretty crap to be fair, only 30MPG.
I would get about 24mpg in the 325i when it was running. Made me want to go back to a rotary, 17/20mpg regardless of how you drive makes things veeery fun.

After seeing this thread I thought I'd check my M40'd cabby. It did 700 miles last week, 450 of which were fully laden towing a 5x3 trailer (family of 4 and more camping gear than millets) and I got 36 mpg. Didn't think that was too bad.
