Look a little less at the rev. counter, and a little more at the gauge directly below it, in the same bezel. Learn the art of keeping it top the left.

I usually down-shift into corners, but I thought that there was no fuel being fed into the engine whilst your foot is off the accelerator.

That's exactly it. I've never known anyone to coast around with their foot on the clutch, unless I've misunderstood something again.

The ONLY way to measure fuel consumption is brim-to-brim the tank at the same pump, same petrol station.
Did mine today 34.22mpg over the last 304 miles.
1986 325i Cab, covered 21633 miles since new.

In my 316i I get about 350 miles to about 55L driving A/B roads in midwales. I never drive slow but I rarely hoon it either. Pretty crap to be fair, only 30MPG.
I would get about 24mpg in the 325i when it was running. Made me want to go back to a rotary, 17/20mpg regardless of how you drive makes things veeery fun.

My cab is a 320i and on the open road it returns 35mpg and around town its doing around 25mpg which IMO is ok for a 27year old 6pot automatic car

After seeing this thread I thought I'd check my M40'd cabby. It did 700 miles last week, 450 of which were fully laden towing a 5x3 trailer (family of 4 and more camping gear than millets) and I got 36 mpg. Didn't think that was too bad.
