Hi All,

A family member of mine has just purchased a 325i sport for the summer, he's had it fully serviced including all new pads around, he was going to get the water pump & timing belt changed next however he took it to a garage & they said the engine is no good due to it cutting of once oil cap is removed? The idle is fine with the oil cap on obviously but once it's removed it totally cuts out

Also the seller said the car has been parked up for a year to if that makes a difference?

Can someone tell me whats going on here? Would be appreciated.

Thanks

He has been put of the car totally, he thinks its a knackered car now based on what someone has told him, do you know if its true or not if it should cut out once the oil cap is removed as i cant find many threads on this

To be honest im not sure if it's true or not that's why i created this thread to find out the problem, the engine doesn't seen knackered as it idles well cold & warm also picks up speed well, so not to sure on who to believe or not

Few people are mentioning air leaks too so will have to check all ruber pipes today. Not to sure in garage as I've never used him before

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... #Air_Leaks

read this and go through the places leaks can occur, when you remove the filler cap your letting alot more air in so if there is already an air leak, it could explain why the engine cuts out.

It is NORMAL for a M20 to run poorly / cut out if the oil cap is removed. You are creating a huge air leak in what should be a sealed crankcase. Removing the engine oil dipstick will have a similar, but not quite as severe effect .

The garage are at best not familiar with these cars which is a sure warning to remove his car , really quickly !

Sounds knackerd I will get you a hundred quid take it off your hands .
My standard m20 does that cuts out when the oil cap is off and runs 14.8 second 1/4 mile times ...so I doubt there is much to worry about really.

Removing the oil filler cap on an E30 M20 engine should make the engine run extremely roughly. If the car has been stored without a battery connected, then the ECU will have lost its base idle settings, and it wouldn't be at all surprised if it stalled.

I remember, in my younger day, topping up with oil and then forgetting to put the cap back. It ran like a rough dog.

It had made a pretty good mess when I lifted the bonnet to check. Thankfully the cap was still sitting on the radiator :)

The car now doesn't cut out once the oil cap is removed, it's runs rough obviously once removed but once put back in runs like a dreams, there were two perished hoses which were replaced! So after all it's not a knackered engine! Onto the next step....thanks for all the help
