Brown will be earth, and the wire with the fuse holder attached will probably be live +12V.

Then, there will be probably two inputs, for left and right, and corresponding outputs to the speakers; those will probably be the twisted yellow and blue pair.

Iv figured out the basics and can identify all the outputs from the stereo but for each of the speaker connections there is another single blue connector are they for tweeters.

Could well be. Does the amp have a make/part number on it?

Jonny - I think you need to find out where it would have been originally fitted. That cabling is so tightly loomed that the location will pinpoint the function of each wire and socket.

A single wire is no good to a speaker of any kind, btw :)

Edit. Just spotted you've identified it as a quadro booster system? This probably means that it allows you to split front right, front left, rear right and rear left for individual control. The single wires will be to send position specific +ve signals to each of these locations, the -ve being non crucial.

I'm not a BMW audio expert, but I know a bit about sound

Depends on whether it relies on the speakers being earthed via the car's chassis or not...

Blue wire is normally electric aerial / trigger wire and considering that main plug looks like it goes into the main distribution point behind the glovebox, it could be the case here.

In which case I'd say this is the main ICE loom which when fitted to the car, connects the amp and head unit together, hence theres an earth tab, the main connector to the distribution points behind the glovebox and a single blue wire which I think is aerial power.

Surely, the aerial trigger would be driven from the head unit?

Perhaps the extra wire(s) go to a graphic equaliser, or the speaker balance control rheostat...

If as B7 states, the amplifier goes in the glove box; assuming it's not been tampered with, the places at which the cables with connectors on peel off the loom will give you a pretty good idea of where it will route in the car, and therefore the function of the various wires :)

Interestingly, it was specified for most E30s, apart from the 316(i) and 320i:

Yes, I was just wondering why they wouldn't list it for the 316(i) and 320i versions also, seeing as these were very popular models in the UK and across Europe.

the blue and white single pin plugs are for the front tweeters and the corresponding for the door looms are in the foot well next to the front speakers.

Someone has bodged in a fuse holder with orange wire (possibly pioneer) and some scotch lock action.

The off set white four pin plug is the main power and earth plug for the head unit and plugs into the junction box behind the glove box.

The amp goes on the N/S of the boot in front of where an electric aerial normally goes.

Would there be any advantage to wiring this in with a modern head unit with a 50x4 output

Doubtful. It's best to use it with period head units.

The factory hifi pack amp is fitted in the n/s/r quarter above the n/s/r arch in the boot.
