After tuning around 180 degrees in a side road my steering has become very heavy.
My initial thoughts were that the belts flung off when on full lock but thats still connected.
There are no leaks and the reservoir is full although seems a little thin, i'm going to change the fluid now hopefully that helps.
Are the pumps a know failure point? The cars a 1993 M40 Tourer.
Cheers

Belt might be on, but it may be loose or so old that it's gone glassy (which causes slipping).
I've not heard of a pump failing on here, but it's a moving part so that could always happen.

So i've changed the belt and fluids and still no joy. Pumps next.
The belt is spinning the pulley but its almost as if drive shaft to the pump has sheered.
daimlerman - i couldn't here the typical whining nose although it is a M40 work horse so i probably couldn't here it over the tappets........

first Check out the Fluid . if it's goin from red to Black that mean your pump is out and it's taking the driven steel from it to the rack which makes it heavy .
if that is not your prob .
then
if you know how to do it .
i recommend Getting a rebuild kit .
Also when buying get the ZF branded ones .
They're better then meyle .
Needs alot of work but it'll run good .
