Don't get to post on here very often, but today I washed my Touring for the first time in 3 years
And without heeding any "laid up" advise, I chucked a battery in it and fired it
Fired first turn, ran the second and continue into a lovely silky 6 cylinder idle

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

Changed brake pads, discs, drums and shoes! Never had so much grief trying to change shoes as I did today! Spent hours on those buggers. I've got cylinders as well but gave up as the brake lining fitting behind hub is rusted to fook and wouldn't budge! Last thing I need is a broken brake pipe. I'll pay someone else to solve that problem! Productive day though, the brakes have never felt so good

Did mine last weekend - I've also never done drums and they were a pain in the ar5e!Mitchen wrote:Changed brake pads, discs, drums and shoes! Pagid stuff seems to work well, I used the same parts as you and she's never felt so good under breaking!
Finally got around to changing the wiper motor and popped two more coats of "renovator" on the roof.
The radiator has had some rad weld in and two weeks down the road all is well.
Mart.

Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.

I drove my daughter to nursery in mine, returned to the car, and the fecker wouldn't start. Radio came on, windows etc, etc worked. It felt like it wasn't properly engaged in P (it's an auto) and some kind of inhibit was in operation.
Following a visit from a very helpful RAC man (who was more than a little entertained by my willingness to help out) I finally drove my now screwdriver operated E30 to the BMW parts department to order a new ignition barrel and key

Not usually the barrel that's at fault. Usual culprit is the actual switch clipped onto the back - the hole in the part that engages with the barrel wears out of shape.beemerbird wrote:I drove my daughter to nursery in mine, returned to the car, and the fecker wouldn't start. If the key won't start it, there's always pins 11 and 14 of the diagnostic socket!

The ignition switch element is in fine fettle, with only slight rounding on the lower part of the appeture. I've inspected it carefully.
Had you been with the car, you'd have realised it was barrel failure - the key (and the spare that the RAC man drove me home to get) would not turn to the ignition position. At all. Obvious mechanical blockage.
Thanks for the reminder about pins 11 and 14
I look low-rent enough driving an E30 to pre-school without popping the bonnet and short circuiting the diagnostic plug in front of the Bentley brigade

So if you ram a screw driver into the ignition barrel, can you then turn it ok?

No! The ignition barrel will not move to the ignition position at all. I'm just using that to apply and remove the steering lock using the key. You'll have to guess the rest, as it sounds like a beginners guide to how to steal an E30

Taxed it, and changed the front wheels so the tyres rotate in the correct direction.
Took them off to change the steering rack and mixed up which side of car they
should have been on.
MOT tester didn't spot them either.

I drove mine all the way from Derbyshire to Torquay last weekend and used about half a tank on the way down! Winner fuel economy from the mighty little M40
I've been on my hols all week down in Devon and done another 100 ish miles during the week and then drove back earlier today. Not a peep or problem out of her all week! Very impressed considering the number of broken down new motors I saw on the hard shoulder driving down and back
I spotted a brilliant red touring whilst I was down there (the guy gave me a big thumbs up as I drove past) and a 320i cabbie which a young girl was driving (I say young, she looked a similar age to me.) anyway I gave her a thumbs up and a wave and she completely blanked me! How rude! If you're on here and some nutter in a red 316i waved at you whilst driving through Paignton it was me.

Today i brought my E30, lovely red 318i Touring, not moved from its heated garage in 8 years, has 65k on the clock and a stack of paperwork to go with it, it is mint, no rust anywhere, couple of odd scratches from where its been sat in the garage but thats all. As soon as my Fighter project is finished the work will start.
Filled it with petrol (which must've at least doubled it's value!) and had a quick blast by the Norfolk coastline yesterday.
Washed it today and treated a couple of minor bits of surface rust on the sills.
Tax due at the end of the month.
