But when you want to set up for traction at the pod with Mickey T's it may of been useful.

I still can't fit the crank etc as it's gotta go to be balenced along with all of the rotating assembly so all I can really do is fit the cam :(

Would like to pop over in mine when its finished but the deadline just gets pushed back more and more the deeper I dig and the more parts she needs ha ha

All of the gen 1 small blocks from 1955 up weighs in at 575 lbs with iron intake and heads. thats about 260 kg

Alum. intake drops weight to about 540 lbs, alum heads drops weight to about 500 lbs, mini starter installed drops it down to 490-492 lbs is about 220kg so im saving weight all the time but still a right lump lol
i dont really worry about the money thats not why i do it. its some thing i like doing building engines and stuff making things

yeah come over and have a butchers :)

christ mate! what are you doing upfront suspension/brake wise I thought my m50 was heavy haha!!
I'd love to eventually swap in the 2.8 crank, rod and pistons when my cars up and running but I'm no engine builder!! :(

I think I need to just to believe it!

as you might have noticed on previous pics i took the anti roll bar out as there is no room for it behind the subframe due to this engine having a rear deep sump unlike the m20 which is at the front

so i thought and done some research the only thing that is some what near to a e30 is a e36 i looked at lots of pics of them and noticed they have a nice cranked down section to clear the sump but this still wasnt going to work on the rear as the cranked section hits the wishbones so theres only one other place for it

put it on the front........ of corse it will have to have some sort of mounting made for it but as you can see it fits pretty well

Image
Image

please ignor the bulk head

Image

as ive found that the e36 arb is not as wide as the e30 not by much
the bushes dont quite line up with the chassis so im going to have to make some box mounts for the bushes to sit on but have them angled in slightly

Image
Image

but i cant see any reason why it wont work it doesnt fowl on anything so looking good to be

ive also took the engine mounts off and drilled the chassis alittle bigger as im going to weld 2 14mm tubes in the chassis for the bolts for a bit of strength other wise i could imagine the engine pulling them thro at some point and im also going to weld the mount to the chassis rail for abit more strength ive got the material on order so ill update this later in the week when thats done

Image

just a coulpe more bits i done today fitted freeze plugs and oil gallery plugs on the block after paint is dry
still have to fit the rear ones but cant do that till engine is off the stand

I had planned to do the same as you ross with the arb.
I kept one here off an e36 m3 evo I had broken, some time ago.
the deep crank in the arb suited my sump too.

yeah well tbh the cranked bit wouldn't really matter if it wasn't there mounting it on the front as my sump is pretty flat at the front but I think it will work quite well

getting there slower than i wanted but cant be helped next plan is to get the clutch sorted so i can send the rest aay to be balanced as he needs a pressure plate
i know a guy that knows a top guy in helix clutchs hes going to make me a custom clutch 10.5'' diameter 8 mm thick plate and a pressure plate up to 3000lb clamping pressure it will be made with the supra centre section for the spline and chevy outer and even tho its going to be running alot of hp he believes i can get away with a organic friction plate with it being think and the clamping force of the pressure plate

the whole lot being custom made is 350 quid which i dont think is a bad price

well seeing as i keep moaning about the rain i thought id do some thing about it ................ my solution

Image
Image

now as thats done and the front anti roll bar is all done i thought id start to tackle to rear first things first get the grinder out

Image

no going bk now after undoing the drive shafts and taking the diff out i started to cut the rear cross member out that holds the diff cover

Image
Image

with the cross member out

Image

and started to clean the pads up where the new cross member will be attached

Image

but sods law i ran out of gas for the welder so will have to wait till monday now to get some more

im going to fit the new diff first to get the correct postion for the cross memeber first them the whole rear beam will come out and be swapped for my new one

more fun and games

continuing from yesterday i got the new diff in its all mock up at the mo so it will all come back out and be done properly at a later date but here the beast in question
one on the left is the medum case one on the right is a large case from a e28 m5 3.07 ratio lsd

Image
Image
Image

this is a big lump i can tell ya
Image
Image

well got it bolted up to the exsisting beam to start with so i can get the new cross member mocked up before i take it all out

and like normal ran into the first problem not thinking that my great idea of using a rear cover from a 750i wouldnt work it dont shit

well saying it dont, it fits, bolts straight on crown wheel is fine but the speed sensor fins are too big where the speed sensor slots in,on the new cover its machined flush with the bolt face,on the original cover the hole for the speed sensor is pulled bk by about 10 mm so it looks like this when bolted on

Image

so what to do i could cut out the old location on the old cover and get it welded in but that would just make a mess so ive decided im going to make a 10mm spacer to pull the whole cover bk 10mm out of a sheet of ali so cant do much more on that till the material arrives

anyway that still didnt stop me cutting things ready for when its sorted
no more commentry ill let ya just look at the pics 8)

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

im still debating on wether to put the drop links behind the cover or in front
